Abstract

An apparatus for joining two hollow organ sections includes a staple cartridge component, an anvil component, a knife member, a buttress mount and a buttress member. The staple cartridge component includes a plurality of surgical staples in an annular array. The anvil component is movable relative to the staple cartridge component between spaced apart and approximated positions to adjustably clamp tissue. The knife member is movable relative to the staple cartridge component. The buttress mount is concentrically disposed at least partially within the lumen of the knife member. The buttress mount includes a plurality of spokes radially extending outward and a plurality of legs detachably secured with an inner wall of the knife member. The buttress member is secured with the plurality of spokes of the buttress mount. The buttress member is concentrically aligned with the plurality of surgical staples.

Claims

1. An apparatus for joining two hollow organ sections with an annular array of surgical staples, the apparatus comprising:

a staple cartridge component including a plurality of surgical staples in an annular array;

an anvil component defining a plurality of staple pockets for deforming the surgical staples, the anvil component movable relative to the staple cartridge component between spaced apart and approximated positions to adjustably clamp tissue between the staple cartridge and anvil components;

a knife member concentrically arranged with the plurality of surgical staples in the staple cartridge component, the knife member defining a lumen therethrough, the knife member movable relative to the staple cartridge component;

a buttress mount concentrically disposed at least partially within the lumen of the knife member, the buttress mount including a plurality of spokes radially extending outward and a plurality of legs detachably secured with an inner wall of the knife member; and

a buttress member secured with the plurality of spokes of the buttress mount, the buttress member concentrically aligned with the plurality of surgical staples.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the buttress member has an annular configuration, the buttress member disposed in a juxtaposed relation with the plurality of surgical staples.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the plurality of spokes at least partially engage an inner portion of the buttress member.

4. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the plurality of spokes engage a proximal surface the buttress member.

5. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the plurality of spokes engage a distal surface the buttress member.

6. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the buttress member is made of a biodegradable material.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the buttress member is disposed distal of the buttress mount.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the buttress member is disposed proximal of the plurality of spokes of the buttress mount.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of legs of the buttress mount each include a protrusion radially extending outward.

10. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the knife member defines a plurality of bores in an inner wall thereof, the plurality of bores configured and dimensioned to securely engage the protrusions therein.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the buttress mount further includes an annular ring member from which the plurality of spokes radially extend outward.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the annular ring member of the buttress mount is dimensioned to receive an actuation shaft that effects axial movement of the anvil component between spaced apart and approximated positions to adjustably clamp tissue.

13. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the annular ring member of the buttress mount is coplanar with the buttress member.

14. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the plurality of legs are flexible.

15. An apparatus for joining two hollow organ sections with an annular array of surgical staples, the apparatus comprising:

a staple cartridge component including a plurality of surgical staples in an annular array;

an anvil component defining a plurality of staple pockets for deforming the surgical staples, the anvil component movable relative to the staple cartridge component between spaced apart and approximated positions to adjustably clamp tissue between the staple cartridge and anvil components;

a knife member concentrically arranged with the plurality of surgical staples in the staple cartridge component, the knife member defining a lumen therethrough, the knife member movable relative to the staple cartridge component; and

a buttress member including at least a pair of anchor portions, the pair of anchor portions securely engaging an inner wall of the staple cartridge component.

16. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the buttress member is concentrically aligned with the plurality of surgical staples.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16, further comprising an O-ring disposed within the staple cartridge component, the O-ring applying outward force to the pair of anchor portions against the inner wall of the staple cartridge component.

18. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the staple cartridge component defines at least a pair of cavities, each of the pair of cavities configured and dimensioned to receive each of the pair of anchor portions.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18, wherein the anchor portion includes a neck portion and a head portion, the head portion having a larger width than that of the neck portion.

20. The apparatus according to claim 19, wherein each of the pair of cavities includes a base portion and a neck portion, the base portion dimensioned to receive therethrough the head portion of the anchor portion and the neck portion dimensioned to receive the neck portion of the anchor portion.

21. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the pair of anchor portions of the buttress member diametrically opposes each other.

22. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the pair of anchor portions of the buttress member extend radially inward.

23. An apparatus for joining two hollow organ sections with an annular array of surgical staples, the apparatus comprising:

a handle assembly including a firing trigger;

an elongate tubular member extending distally from the handle assembly;

a staple cartridge component coupled to a distal portion of the elongate tubular member, the staple cartridge component including a plurality of surgical staples in an annular array;

an anvil component defining a plurality of staple pockets for deforming the surgical staples, the anvil component movable relative to the staple cartridge component between spaced apart and approximated positions to clamp tissue between the staple cartridge and anvil components;

a knife member concentrically arranged with the plurality of surgical staples in the staple cartridge component, the knife member defining a lumen therethrough, the knife member movable relative to the staple cartridge component;

a buttress mount concentrically disposed with the lumen of the knife member, the buttress mount including a plurality of legs detachably secured with an inner wall of the lumen of the knife member; and

a buttress member coupled with the plurality of legs of the buttress mount, the buttress member concentrically aligned with the plurality of surgical staples.

24. The apparatus according to claim 23, wherein the plurality of legs each include a radially extending component and a longitudinally extending component, the radially extending component at least partially affixed to the buttress member and the longitudinally extending component securely engaging the lumen of the knife member.

25. An apparatus for joining two hollow organ sections with an annular array of surgical staples, the apparatus comprising:

a staple cartridge component including a plurality of surgical staples in an annular array;

an anvil component including an anvil plate defining a plurality of staple pockets for deforming the surgical staples and a rim disposed around a periphery of the anvil plate, the anvil component defining a circumferential gap between the anvil plate and the rim, the anvil component movable relative to the staple cartridge component between spaced apart and approximated positions to adjustably clamp tissue between the staple cartridge and anvil components;

a knife member concentrically arranged with the plurality of surgical staples in the staple cartridge component, the knife member defining a lumen therethrough, the knife member movable relative to the staple cartridge component; and

a buttress member at least partially engaging the circumferential gap defined in the anvil component.

26. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the buttress member has an annular profile.

27. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the rim of the anvil component is configured and dimensioned to enclose a distal surface of the staple cartridge component.

28. An apparatus for joining two hollow organ sections with an annular array of surgical staples, the apparatus comprising:

a staple cartridge component including a distal surface, the distal surface defining an annular array of surgical staple receiving slots and a groove;

an anvil component movable relative to the staple cartridge component between spaced apart and approximated positions to adjustably clamp tissue between the staple cartridge and anvil components; and

a buttress member at least partially engaging the groove defined the distal surface of the staple cartridge component.

29. The apparatus according to claim 28, wherein the buttress member includes circumferentially arranged tabs configured and dimensioned to be received in the groove defined in the distal surface of the staple cartridge component.

30. The apparatus according to claim 28, wherein the groove defined in the distal surface of the staple cartridge component is a circumferential groove defined in a periphery of the staple cartridge component.

31. The apparatus according to claim 28, wherein the anvil component includes an anvil plate defining a plurality of staple pockets for deforming the surgical staples and a rim disposed around a periphery of the anvil plate, the anvil component defining a circumferential gap between the anvil plate and the rim.

32. The apparatus according to claim 31, further comprising a second buttress member at least partially engaging the circumferential gap defined in the anvil component.

33. The apparatus according to claim 28, further comprising a knife member concentrically arranged with the plurality of surgical staples in the staple cartridge component, the knife member movable relative to the staple cartridge component.
