1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
- a TFT substrate having gate lines and data lines arranged thereon, the gate lines extending in a first direction and arranged in a second direction, the data lines extending in the second direction and arranged in the first direction;
a counter substrate having a black matrix and a color filter; and
liquid crystals put between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate;
whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate,pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers,a convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of the columnar spacer,the pedestal is formed corresponding to the concave portion, andthe concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected to the lateral side of the columnar spacer.

Abstract
A liquid crystal display device includes: a TFT substrate having gate lines and data lines arranged thereon, the gate lines extending in a first direction and arranged in a second direction, the data lines extending in the second direction and arranged in the first direction; a counter substrate having a black matrix and a color filter; and liquid crystals put between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate. Columnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate. Pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers. A convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of the columnar spacer. The pedestal is formed corresponding to the concave portion. The concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected to the lateral side of the columnar spacer.

its display region having a shorter side and a longer side, whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate, pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers, a convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of the columnar spacer, the pedestal is formed in facing relation to the concave portion, the concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected to the lateral side of the columnar spacer, the direction in which the groove of a first columnar spacer is formed is the same direction as the longer side of the display region and the direction in which the groove of a second columnar space is formed is the same direction as the shorter side of the display region, and the first columnar spacers and the second columnar spacers are used in parallel. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)

whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate, pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers, a convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of the columnar spacer, the convex portions are arranged by the number of n each at an interval of 360/n in view of a polar coordination, the concave portion is formed between each of the adjacent convex portions, the pedestal is formed corresponding to the concave portion, the concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected with the lateral side of the columnar spacer, the convex portion of a first columnar spacer and the convex portion of a second columnar spacer are arranged each at a distance displaced by 360/2n in view of a polar coordination, and the first columnar spacers and the second columnar spacers are used in parallel. - View Dependent Claims (10)

a TFT substrate having gate lines and data lines arranged thereon, the gate lines extending in a first direction and arranged in a second direction, the data lines extending in the second direction and arranged in the first direction; a counter substrate having a black matrix and a color filter; and liquid crystals put between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate;
its display region having a shorter side and a longer side, whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate, pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers, a convex portion is present on one side of the top end of the columnar spacer and a concave portion is present on the other side of the top end of the columnar spacer, the concave portion is opened at the ends thereof except for the boundary portion with the convex portion and connected to the lateral side of the columnar spacer, the pedestal is present in facing relation to the concave portion, the boundary of the convex portion of a first columnar spacer is formed in a first direction, the boundary of the convex portion of a second columnar spacer is formed in the second direction, the boundary of the convex portion of a third columnar spacer is formed in a third direction, and the boundary of the convex portion of a fourth columnar spacer is formed in a fourth direction, the first direction, the second direction, the third direction, and the fourth direction are displaced by about 90 degree from each other, and the first columnar spacers, the second columnar spacers, the third columnar spacers, and the fourth columnar spacers are used in parallel.

the TFT substrate having pixel electrodes and TFTs formed in a matrix, whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate, pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers, the pedestal is formed on the basis of a drain electrode and a source electrode of the TFT, a convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of the columnar spacer, the pedestal is formed corresponding to the concave portion, and the concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected with the lateral side of the columnar spacer.

the TFT substrate having pixel electrodes and TFTs formed in a matrix, whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate, pedestals are formed on portions of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers, the pedestal is formed on the basis of a drain electrode and a source electrode of the TFT, a convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of a first columnar spacer, the pedestal is formed corresponding to the concave portion, the concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected to the lateral side of the columnar spacer, the top end of a second columnar spacer is flat, and the pedestal is formed in facing relation to the second columnar spacer, and the second columnar spacer and the pedestal are not in contact with each other in a usual state.

whereincolumnar spacers are formed on the counter substrate, pedestals are formed on a portion of the TFT substrate, the portions corresponding to the columnar spacers, a convex portion and a concave portion are present at the top end of the columnar spacer, the pedestal is formed corresponding to the concave portion, the concave portion is opened at the ends thereof and connected to the lateral side of the columnar spacer, and the columnar spacer has a substantially trapezoidal cross sectional shape, and the diameter for the portion of a larger cross sectional width is larger than the width of the black matrix which is formed corresponding to the columnar spacer. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17)
