Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly includes, one, a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions and, two, a layer, such as a tissue thickness compensator and/or a buttress material, for example, wherein the staples are configured to at least partially capture the layer when the staples are moved between the unfired positions and the fired positions. The layer can include a cushioning member at least partially extending around a peripheral portion of the tissue thickness compensator. The layer can include features which create a flexible transition between the tissue supported by the layer and the staples and the unsupported tissue.

Claims

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions;

a layer, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions; and

a cushioning member at least partially extending around a peripheral portion of said layer.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said layer is comprised from a first biocompatible material, wherein said cushioning member is comprised from a second biocompatible material, and wherein said first biocompatible material is different from said second biocompatible material.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said cushioning member is comprised from oxidized regenerated cellulose.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said cushioning member comprises beads configured to soften upon implantation in a patient.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1, wherein said cushioning member comprises alginate beads.

6. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

a layer, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions, said layer comprising;

a first portion; and

a second portion at least partially surrounding said first portion, wherein said second portion is more flexible than said first portion.

7. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said first portion comprises a first thickness, wherein said second portion comprises a second thickness, and wherein said first thickness is greater than said second thickness.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a scalloped outer edge.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a feathered outer edge.

10. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a plurality of slits.

11. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10, wherein said staples, in said fired positions, form a staple line along at least a portion of said captured layer, and wherein each said slit is configured to be in a plane crossing said staple line between said staples.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a plurality of openings therethrough.

13. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a plurality of depressions.

14. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a plurality of corrugations.

15. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises an outer edge, and wherein said outer edge comprises a section inwardly rolled towards said first portion.

16. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 6, wherein said second portion comprises a plurality of V-shaped slits.

17. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

a layer, comprising;

a first layer, said first layer comprising an outer periphery, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said first layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions; and

a second layer positioned over said first layer, said second layer configured to extend beyond said outer periphery of said first layer.

18. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein said first layer comprises an inner portion, and an outer portion at least partially surrounding said inner portion, and wherein said outer portion is more flexible than said inner portion.

19. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 17, wherein said second layer comprises a woven layer, said woven layer including fibrous edges.

20. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

a layer, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions, said layer comprising a plurality of pieces separably bound to form a continuous structure, wherein said pieces comprise atraumatic outer peripheries, and wherein said pieces are configured to separate from each other after implantation.

21. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 20, wherein said pieces are separably bound by thermal bonding.

22. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 20, wherein said pieces comprise circular profiles.

23. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 20, wherein said pieces comprise hexagonal profiles.

24. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

a layer comprised of a biocompatible material, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions, said layer comprising a plurality of portions designated by an embossed pattern, wherein said embossed pattern is configured to guide a separation of said portions after implantation of said layer in a patient.

25. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 24, wherein each of said portions comprise atraumatic outer peripheries.
