Abstract

A traffic routing system reduces emissions from commuter and other traffic, eases congestion on roadways, and decreases transit time by use of communications among vehicles and traffic controls, such as traffic lights. In one aspect, a traffic light receives a signal that a vehicle is approaching and in response turns green to allow the vehicle to pass without impairment. In another aspect, a vehicle receives a signal to adjust a current rate of speed to arrive when a traffic signal allows vehicles to pass. In still another aspect, a combination of congestion, emergency traffic, roadwork and similar factors influence proposed routes sent to vehicles.

Claims

1. A traffic communication system, comprising:

a traffic signal having a plurality of states;

a controller subsystem, remote from the traffic signal, configured to communicate with the traffic signal; and

a user device, remote from the controller subsystem, configured to communicate with the controller subsystem via a network, the user device further configured for communications with the traffic signal using the controller subsystem as an intermediary.

2. The traffic communication system of claim 1, wherein the network is the Internet.

3. The traffic communication system of claim 1, wherein the communication between the user device and the traffic signal occurs based upon a proximity between the traffic signal and the user device.

4. The traffic communication system of claim 3, wherein the controller subsystem is configured to determine the proximity responsive to position information provided by the user device.

5. The traffic communication system of claim 3, wherein the proximity comprises correspondence between a position of the traffic signal and a predicted future position of the user device.

6. The traffic communication system of claim 5, wherein the controller subsystem is configured to determine the proximity responsive to a predetermined route for the user device.

7. The traffic communication system of claim 3, wherein the controller is configured to cause the traffic signal to change state responsive to said proximity.

8. A user device, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing executable computer program code for;

sending to a controller, via a network, location information;

receiving, via the network, information relating to a state of a traffic signal, the traffic signal being selected responsive to the location information; and

a processor configured to communicate with the computer readable medium and to execute the program code.

9. A controller subsystem, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing executable computer program code for;

receiving from a traffic signal information relating to states of the traffic signal, the traffic signal remote from the controller subsystem; and

sending to a user device, via a network, an indication of a state of the traffic signal at a specified time, the indication based on the information; and

a processor configured to communicate with the computer readable medium and to execute the program code.

10. The controller subsystem of claim 9, wherein the specified time is a current time.

11. The controller subsystem of claim 9, wherein the specified time is a future time at which the user device is expected to be proximal to the traffic signal.

12. The controller subsystem of claim 9, wherein the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium further stores executable computer program code for:

receiving from the user device an indication of a position; and

selecting the traffic signal from a plurality of traffic signals responsive to a proximity between the indicated position and a position of the traffic signal.

13. The controller subsystem of claim 12, wherein the indicated position is a current position of the user device.

14. The controller subsystem of claim 12, wherein the indicated position is a predicted future position of the user device.

15. The controller subsystem of claim 14, wherein the predicted future position is based on a predetermined route associated with the user device.

16. A computer-implemented method of communicating information between a vehicle and a traffic signal, comprising:

operatively connecting the vehicle to a network by a user device;

operatively connecting an interaction module to the network, the interaction module operatively connected to the traffic signal, wherein the traffic signal is remote from the interaction module; and

communicating the information between the vehicle and the traffic signal using the interaction module as an intermediary.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein communicating the information includes processing the information by a controller that is also connected to the interaction module.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the network is the Internet.

19. A traffic communication system, comprising:

a traffic signal having a plurality of states;

a controller subsystem, remote from the traffic signal, configured to communicate with the traffic signal via a network; and

a user device, remote from the controller subsystem, configured to communicate with the controller subsystem, the user device further configured for communications with the traffic signal using the controller subsystem as an intermediary.

20. The traffic communication system of claim 19, wherein the network is the Internet.
