Abstract

Systems and methods for forwarding data packets to facilitate an IP telephony communication make use of a media relay to accomplish the forwarding actions. The media relay is configured receive setup signaling indicating a first acceptable originating IP address for received data packets. The media relay also allows the acceptable originating IP address to change once after the initial call setup has occurred. Also, if a REINVITE action occurs during a call, the media relay will allow the acceptable originating IP address to change once after the REINVITE signaling has been completed.

Claims

1. A method of maintaining a blacklist of unacceptable originating IP addresses at a media relay, comprising:

adding the originating IP address of a data packet received by the media relay to the blacklist each time that a data packet is received by an idle port of the media relay;

removing an originating IP address from the blacklist if call setup signaling is received by the media relay, and the call setup signaling indicates that the media relay should expect to receive data packets from the originating IP address.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the blacklist of unacceptable originating IP addresses is specific to a particular port of the media relay.

The method of claim 1, further comprising adding the originating IP address of a data packet received by the media relay to the blacklist each time that a data packet is received by an active port of the media relay if the originating IP address of the received data packet does not match an acceptable originating IP address for the active port and the acceptable originating IP address has already been changed once after receipt of call setup signaling.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the blacklist of unacceptable originating IP addresses is specific to the active port of the media relay.

5. A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon, which when executed by one or more processors of a media relay, cause the media relay to perform a method comprising:

adding the originating IP address of a data packet received by the media relay to the blacklist each time that a data packet is received by an idle port of the media relay;

removing an originating IP address from the blacklist if call setup signaling is received by the media relay, and the call setup signaling indicates that the media relay should expect to receive data packets from the originating IP address.

6. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 5, wherein the instructions cause the media relay to add and remove originating IP addresses to a blacklist of unacceptable IP addresses that is specific to a particular port of the media relay.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 5, wherein the instructions also cause the media relay to add the originating IP address of a data packet received by an active port of the media relay to the blacklist if the originating IP address of the received data packet does not match an acceptable originating IP address for the active port and the acceptable originating IP address has already been changed once after receipt of call setup signaling.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the instructions cause the media relay to add and remove originating IP addresses to a blacklist of unacceptable originating IP addresses that is specific to a particular port of the media relay.

9. A system for maintaining a blacklist of unacceptable originating IP addresses at a media relay, comprising:

means for adding the originating IP address of a data packet received by the media relay to the blacklist each time that a data packet is received by an idle port of the media relay; and

means for removing an originating IP address from the blacklist if call setup signaling is received by the media relay, and the call setup signaling indicates that the media relay should expect to receive data packets from the originating IP address.

10. A system for maintaining a blacklist of unacceptable originating IP addresses at a media relay, comprising:

an addition unit that adds the originating IP address of a data packet received by the media relay to the blacklist each time that a data packet is received by an idle port of the media relay; and

a removal unit that removes an originating IP address from the blacklist if call setup signaling is received by the media relay, and the call setup signaling indicates that the media relay should expect to receive data packets from the originating IP address.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the addition unit and the removal unit add and remove IP addresses from a blacklist of unacceptable IP addresses that is specific to a particular port of the media relay.

The system of claims 10, wherein the addition unit also adds the originating IP address of a data packet received by the media relay to the blacklist each time that a data packet is received by an active port of the media relay if the originating IP address of the received data packet does not match an acceptable IP address specified in received call setup signaling and the acceptable IP address has already been changed once after receipt of the call setup signaling.

13. The system of claims 12, wherein the addition unit and the removal unit add and remove IP addresses from a blacklist of unacceptable IP addresses that is specific to a particular port of the media relay.
