Abstract

A drug delivery device, including a body (104, 116) having a reservoir (160) disposed therein for containing a medicament and an injection needle (152) for penetrating the skin of a patient, the needle (152) providing a path for the medicament between the reservoir (160) and the patient. The device also includes a rotor (580) rotatably disposed in the body (104, 116) for activating the device upon rotation of the rotor (580), a needle cover (112) for covering the injection needle, and a needle cover clip (560) disposed on the needle cover (112) to rotate from a first position preventing rotor rotation to a second position permitting rotor rotation.

Claims

1. A drug delivery device, comprising:

a body having a reservoir disposed therein for containing a medicament;

a rotor disposed in the body to move from a pre-activated position to an activated position to activate the device;

an injection needle for penetrating the skin of a patient, the needle providing a path for the medicament between the reservoir and the patient;

a needle cover for covering the injection needle and preventing movement of the rotor to prevent device activation.

2. The device according to claim 1, wherein the needle cover comprises a lockout pin engageable with the rotor through an opening in the device body to prevent device activation.

3. The device according to claim 2, wherein:

the rotor has an engagement slot aligned with the device body opening when the rotor is in the pre-activated position; and

;

the lockout pin engages the engagement slot through the device body opening to prevent device activation.

4. The device according to claim 3, wherein:

the needle cover comprises a needle cover clip rotatably disposed on a needle-covering portion; and

the lockout pin is disposed on the needle cover clip.

5. The device according to claim 4, wherein:

the rotor comprises a protrusion; and

the needle covering portion comprises at least one flange for engaging the rotor protrusion, thereby registering the needle cover to align the lockout pin for passage through the device body opening.

6. A drug delivery device, comprising:

a body having a reservoir disposed therein for containing a medicament;

an injection needle for penetrating the skin of a patient, the needle providing a path for the medicament between the reservoir and the patient; and

a needle cover having a first portion for covering the injection needle and a second portion movable from a first position preventing device activation to a second position enabling device activation.

7. The device according to claim 6, further comprising a rotor disposed in the body to move from a pre-activated position to an activated position to activate the device;

wherein the second portion of the needle cover engages the rotor to prevent the rotor from moving to the activated position.

8. The device according to claim 7, wherein:

the rotor has an engagement slot; and

the second portion of the needle cover comprises a lockout pin for engaging the engagement slot through an opening in the device body, to prevent device activation.

9. The device according to claim 8, wherein:

the second portion of the needle cover comprises a needle cover clip rotatably disposed on the first portion of the needle cover; and

the lockout pin is disposed on the needle cover clip.

10. The device according to claim 9, wherein:

the rotor comprises a protrusion; and

the first portion of the needle cover comprises at least one flange for engaging the rotor protrusion, thereby registering the needle cover to align the lockout pin for selective passage through the device body opening.

11. A drug delivery device, comprising:

a body having a reservoir disposed therein for containing a medicament;

a rotor rotatably disposed in the body for activating the device upon rotation of the rotor;

an injection needle for penetrating the skin of a patient, the needle providing a path for the medicament between the reservoir and the patient;

a needle cover for covering the injection needle; and

a needle cover clip disposed on the needle cover to rotate from a first position preventing rotor rotation to a second position permitting rotor rotation.

12. The drug delivery device according to claim 11, wherein the needle cover clip comprises a lockout pin engageable with the rotor through an opening in the device body to prevent rotor rotation.

13. The drug delivery device according to claim 12, wherein:

the rotor has an engagement slot aligned with the device body opening when the rotor is in a pre-activated position; and

;

the lockout pin engages the engagement slot through the device body opening to prevent rotor rotation.

14. The device according to claim 13, wherein:

the rotor comprises a protrusion; and

the needle covering portion comprises at least one flange for engaging the rotor protrusion when the rotor is in the pre-activated position, thereby registering the needle cover to align the lockout pin for passage through the device body opening.
