Abstract

An input and processing system allows user input information such as user affinity to efficiently determine user characteristics from content as well as novel input of commands such as copy/paste on a small mobile device screen among other computing devices. A client/server is also made more efficient due to the enhanced gathering of information. Also disclosed is a system for rapid presentation of information such as barcodes at barcode scanners. A system can request multiple barcodes, coupons or the like by detecting a signal from a scanner that information presented has been read.

Claims

1. A non-transitory computer readable media having instructions stored thereon that are executable by processor electronics to:

display one or more items of content to a user;

detect a selection by the user of at least one item of content displayed;

in response to the selected content, determining if the selected content includes any related information; and

transmitting a reference to an identity of the selected content and any related information to a remote computer system to use the selected content and related information to update a profile of likely characteristics of the user based on the selected content and the information related to the selected content.

2. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1, further comprising instructions that determine a link associated with the selected content.

3. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 2, further comprising instructions that transmit the link to the remote computer system.

4. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1, further comprising instructions that assign a tag to the selected content wherein the tag is a record of the gesture.

5. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 4, wherein the tag is an affinity tag.

6. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 4, further comprising instructions that transmit the tag to the remote computer.

7. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 1, further comprising instructions to indicate that one or more items of content on the display are selectable with a user gesture as selected content.

8. A non-transitory computer readable media having instructions stored thereon that are executable by processor electronics to:

display one or more items of content for a user;

detect a gesture performed by the user to select at least one item of content;

in response to the detected gesture, assign a tag to the selected item of content; and

update a profile that indicates one or more likely characteristics of the user based on the tag.

9. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 8, wherein the update is further based upon at least a portion of the selected item of content, or a reference to an identity of the selected item of content.

10. A non-transitory computer readable media having instructions stored thereon that are executable by processor electronics to:

create an item of content for user display;

associate one or more likely characteristics of a user based on a user'"'"'s response indicating if they have an affinity for the item of content;

detect if a user indicates an affinity for the item of content; and

update a profile of the user'"'"'s characteristics based on the detected response.

11. A processor-based system, comprising:

memory for storing instructions that are executable by processor electronics;

processor electronics configured to execute the instructions in order to;

receive an indication of a user having selected an item of content on a display;

analyze the selected content to determine one or more likely characteristics of the user who selected the content;

determine information that is related to the selected item of content; and

update a profile of the user that indicates one or more likely characteristics of the user based on the selected content and related information.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is configured to retrieve information about the selected content from a computing device that is referenced by a link associated with the selected content.

13. A non-transitory computer readable media having instructions stored thereon that are executable by processor electronics to:

tag an item of content with one or more likely characteristics that can be attributed to persons that react to the item either favorably or unfavorably;

display the content for a user;

detect a gesture performed by the user directed towards the content; and

update a profile that indicates one or more likely characteristics of the user based on the detected gesture directed towards the content.

14. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to detect the gesture directed towards the content by:

detecting when the user touches the content on a display screen; and

detecting when the user moves a touch point on the display screen in a predefined direction over the content.

The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 14, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to re-display the selected content at a location that is under the touch point of the user as the user is moving the touch point on the display screen while performing the gesture.

16. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to display indicia of whether the user is indicating a favorable or unfavorable impression of the content in a space where the content was first displayed prior to the content being re-displayed as the user is performing the gesture.

17. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 15, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to:

determine an angular direction at which the user performs the gesture as measured from a point where the user first touches the content; and

perform a command on the content if the angular direction is not within a range defined as providing a favorable impression of the content or a range defined as providing an unfavorable impression of the content.

18. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to display a representation of whether the processor electronics recorded a favorable or unfavorable impression of the content after the user has finished the gesture.

19. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to display a menu over the content that indicates what command will be interpreted by the processor electronics depending on an angular direction in which the gesture is performed.

20. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to assign the tag to the content based at least upon a URL or URI of a website from where the content was obtained.

21. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to assign the tag to the content based at least upon other content presented with the content.

22. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 20, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to transmit a record of the gesture detected on the content to another computing device.

23. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 19, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to recommend content to a user based at least on the updated, characteristics associated with the user performing the gesture on the content.

24. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor electronics to update the profile by receiving one or more of:

GPS coordinates indicative of a location of the user, a time, a date, a user ID, a user browsing history, or user inputs.

25. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 13, further comprising instructions that cause the processor to add the characteristics represented by the tag to a user'"'"'s interest graph.

26. The non-transitory computer readable media of claim 25, further comprising instructions that cause the processor to gather a plurality of user interest graphs having substantially similar demographic characteristics represented by similar tags.

27. A non-transitory computer readable media containing instructions that are executable by processor electronics to display content on a display screen by:

displaying items of content on a display screen; and

presenting an indication associated with one or more of the items of content that indicates that a user may perform a gesture on the item of content by moving the item of content in a predefined direction on the display screen in order to indicate that the user likes or dislikes the item of content.

28. The computer readable media of claim 27, further comprising instructions that are executable by the processor electronics to detect the gesture by:

determining if the user has moved a point of contact over the item of content in a predetermined direction.

29. The computer readable media of claim 27, further comprising instructions that are executable by the processor electronics to detect the gesture by:

determining if the user has rotated a point of contact over the content item in a predetermined direction.

30. A non-transitory computer readable media of claim 27, further comprising instructions that are executable by the processor electronics to retrieve information from a remote computing device referenced by a link between the item of content associated with another piece of data.
