Abstract

Closed loop heat exchange catheters having bi-directional flow heat exchange regions and their methods of manufacture and use. The heat exchange region may be formed of expandable or non-expandable tubular conduit(s) that are configured in a series of loops or coiled configuration defining a supply flow path and a return flow path through which heat exchange medium is circulated. The individual loops of convolutions of the coiled configuration may be the same or different size. In some embodiments, the tubular conduit(s) may be passed through generally transverse bore holes formed in a catheter shaft so that the loops or convolutions of protrude from the catheter shaft.

Claims

1. A catheter device comprising:

an elongate catheter body; and

a heat exchange region having a proximal end and a distal end;

said heat exchange region comprising a first flow path through which heat exchange fluid flows toward the distal end and a second flow path through which heat exchange fluid flows toward the proximal end.

2. A catheter device according to claim 1 wherein the heat exchanger comprises a tube through which heat exchange fluid flows, a first segment of said tube forming the first flow path and a second segment of said tube forming the second.

3. A catheter device according to claim 2 wherein the catheter body has an inflow lumen and an outflow lumen and the tube has a first end and a second end and wherein:

the first end of the tube is connected to the inflow lumen;

the first segment of the tube forms the first flow path;

the second segment of the tube forms the second flow path; and

the second end of the tube is connected to the outflow lumen.

4. A catheter device according to claim 2 wherein the tube has a wall thickness that is thinner than the wall thickness of the catheter body.

5. A catheter device according to claim 2 wherein a series of transverse bores are formed in the catheter body and the tube is threaded through said bores such that loops of said tube reside outside of the catheter body.

6. A catheter device according to claim 1 wherein the catheter body further comprises a through lumen that extends through at least a portion of the catheter body and terminates distally in a distal port.

7. A catheter device according to claim 6 wherein the through lumen is useable as a guidewire lumen to facilitate advancement of the catheter body over a guidewire.

8. A catheter device according to claim 6 wherein the through lumen is useable as a delivery lumen to facilitate delivery of a therapeutic substance or device into the subject'"'"'s body.

9. A catheter device according to claim 5 wherein the tubing loops formed in the first segment of the tube and the tubing loops formed in the second segment of the tube overlap or cross each other.

10. A catheter device according to claim 1 wherein the transverse bores are ovoid or oval in shape.

11. A catheter device according to claim 1 wherein the transverse bores extend through the catheter body at non-right angles relative to a longitudinal axis of the catheter body.

A catheter device according to claim 1 wherein the first flow path is comprises convolutions or loops of a first diameter or cross-dimension and the second flow path comprises convolutions or loops of a second diameter or cross-dimension that is smaller than the first diameter or cross dimension.

13. A catheter device according to claim 1 wherein the first flow path is of a first length and the second flow path is of a second length that is shorter than said first length.

14. A system comprising a catheter device according to claim 1 in combination with apparatus for circulating heated or cooled thermal exchange fluid though the catheter device.

15. A system according to claim 14 further comprising a temperature sensor useable for sensing the temperature of all or a portion of a subject'"'"'s body.

16. A system according to claim 14 further comprising a controller which controls the temperature and/or flowrate of thermal exchange that is circulated through the catheter device.

17. A system according to claim 16 wherein the controller receives a) an input target body temperature and b) signals from the temperature sensor indicative of the sensed body temperature and wherein the controller is programmed to vary the temperature and/or flowrate of the thermal exchange fluid in a manner that causes or attempts to cause the sensed body temperature to be the same as or within an acceptable range of the target body temperature.

18. A method for modifying or controlling a body temperature in a mammalian subject, said method comprising the steps of:

inserting into the vasculature of the subject a heat exchange catheter according to any of claims 1 through 18 such that the heat exchange region is in contact with blood flowing through the vasculature; and

circulating heat exchange fluid through the supply flow path and return flow path of the heat exchange region to warm or cool blood flowing through the subject'"'"'s vasculature.
