Abstract

To perform thread-based message prioritization, metadata may be extracted from a received electronic message. Based on the extracted message metadata and accumulated metadata extracted from previously received messages, a message thread to which the received electronic message belongs may be identified. Based on a set of thread priority assessment criteria, a priority level for the message thread may be determined. At least part of the message thread may be processed according to the priority level. The processing may be altering a notification behavior of an electronic messaging client for electronic messages of the message thread. Thread priority assessment may be based on user-configurable criteria that may be set via a graphical user interface. Message thread identification may also be based on user-configurable criteria that may be set via a graphical user interface.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a communication device, a new message from a server; and

the communication device displaying the new message and at least one previously received message from a message grouping to which the new message belongs with a notification behavior according to a determined priority level of the new message.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the message grouping comprises a message thread.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the priority level of the new message is determined at least in part from a priority of the message grouping.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the priority of the message grouping was previously determined.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the priority level of the new message is determined prior to receipt of the new message at the communication device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining that the new message belongs to the message grouping.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the determining occurs prior to receipt of the new message at the communication device.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the determining is based on user-configurable identification criteria.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the notification behaviour comprises a change in appearance in the display of the new message and the at least one previously received message.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the display of the new message and the at least one previously received message comprises display in a message listing.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the priority level of the new message is determined by presence of a keyword in the new message or the at least one previously received message.

12. A communication device, comprising:

at least one processor configured to enable;

receiving a new message from a server; and

displaying the new message and at least one previously received message from a message grouping to which the new message belongs with a notification behavior according to a determined priority level of the new message.

13. The communication device of claim 12, wherein the message grouping comprises a message thread.

14. The communication device of claim 12, wherein the priority level of the new message is determined at least in part from a priority of the message grouping.

15. The communication device of claim 14, wherein the priority of the message grouping was previously determined.

16. The communication device of claim 12, wherein the priority level of the new message is determined prior to receipt of the new message at the communication device.

17. The communication device of claim 12, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to enable determining that the new message belongs to the message grouping.

18. The communication device of claim 17, wherein the determining occurs prior to receipt of the new message at the communication device.

19. The communication device of claim 17, wherein the determining is based on user-configurable identification criteria.

20. The communication device of claim 12, wherein the notification behaviour comprises a change in appearance in the display of the new message and the at least one previously received message.

21. The communication device of claim 20, wherein the display of the new message and the at least one previously received message comprises display in a message listing.

22. The communication device of claim 12, wherein the priority level of the new message is determined by presence of a keyword in the new message or the at least one previously received message.

23. A non-transitory communication device-readable medium bearing code which, when executed by one or more processors of a communication device, causes the communication device to implement the method of:

receiving a new message from a server; and

displaying the new message and at least one previously received message from a message grouping to which the new message belongs with a notification behavior according to a determined priority level of the new message.
