RADIO-AWARENESS OF MOBILE DEVICE FOR SENDING SERVER-SIDE CONTROL SIGNALS USING A WIRELESS NETWORK OPTIMIZED TRANSPORT PROTOCOL
First Claim
1. A method of sending a server-generated message to a mobile device based on awareness of radio state of the mobile device, the method, comprising:
- identifying the radio state of the mobile device, irrespective of whether a TCP connection is open between at the mobile device;
sending the server-generated message over the TCP connection or short message service (SMS) based on the radio state.

Abstract
System and method of radio-awareness of mobile device for sending server-side control signals using a wireless network optimized transport protocol are disclosed. One embodiment includes a method of sending a message over an alternate channel to a mobile device in the presence of an open TCP connection with a mobile device, including sending the message over the alternate channel to the mobile device, without utilizing the open TCP connection, responsive to determining that a timing criteria has been met. The alternate channel utilized need not cause a radio of the mobile device to switch on.

23. A system for sending a message over an alternate channel to a mobile device in the presence of an open TCP connection with a mobile device, the system, comprising:
-
means for, identifying a timing criteria from a transport protocol packet header; means for, determining whether the timing criteria is met; means for, sending the message over the alternate channel to the mobile device, without utilizing the open TCP connection, responsive to determining that a timing criteria has been met; wherein, the alternate channel need not cause a radio of the mobile device to switch on; wherein, the timing criteria is dynamically adjustable.

24. A mobile device which receives control signals over a channel alternate to an IP channel that is open, the mobile device, comprising:
-
a processor; a memory unit having instructions stored thereon which when executed by the processor, causes the mobile device to; determine a timeout parameter corresponding to an amount of time a radio of the mobile device will be active; receive the control signals over the channel, without utilizing the IP channel, responsive to determining that a timing specified by the timeout parameter has been reached or exceeded; wherein, the alternate channel utilized for the control signals need not cause a radio of the mobile device to switch on or otherwise change to a higher powered state. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30)
