Abstract

Methods and apparatus for supporting and using multiple communications channels corresponding to different transmit technologies and/or access technologies in parallel within a cell of a wireless communications system are described. Mobile nodes support multiple technologies and can switch between the technology being used at a particular point in time, from a first channel corresponding to a first technology to a second channel corresponding to a different technology which provides better transmission characteristics, e.g., a better perceived channel quality. Mobiles maintain at least two sets of channel quality information at any one point in time. Mobiles select the better channel and communicate the channel selection to the base station or communicate channel quality information for multiple channels to the base station and allow the base station to select the channel corresponding to the technology providing the better conditions for the mobile. Different mobiles in the same cell may support different technologies.

Claims

1. A method of operating a base station comprising the steps of:

transmitting signals corresponding to a plurality of different communications channels in parallel, at least two of said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies;

receiving information, from a wireless terminal which supports said plurality of different communications channels; and

selecting between said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies for use in communicating with said wireless terminal as a function of a rate of motion of said wireless terminal.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

controlling allocation of resources to said communications channels in response to the selection of a communications channel corresponding to a particular communications technology.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said controlling the allocation of resources is responsive to channel request information and creates a communications channel using a communications technology corresponding to the particular communications technology of the selected communications channel.

The method of claim 2, wherein said allocation of resources is done by using resources from a communications channel implemented using a first communications technology and reassign the resources to a communications channel using a second communications technology when the demand for a communications channel using the second communications technology increases, said first and second communications technologies being different.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said step of selecting a communications channel includes selecting between at least two different communications channels implemented using different communications technologies.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the base station reallocates resources between communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies based on signals received from one or more wireless terminals.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the base station creates a communications channel corresponding to a particular communications technology in response to a signal indicating a request for a communications channel using the particular communications technology from a wireless terminal.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the base station maintains said created communications channel for a period of time which is a function of at least one signal received from said wireless terminal which requested the communications channel.

The method of claim 1, wherein the base station includes multiple antennas, a first set of wireless terminals which interact with said base station including multiple receive antennas, a second set of wireless terminals which interact with said base station including a single antenna, wireless terminals including multiple receive antennas using a communications channel corresponding to a MINO technology during some points in time with which they interact with said base station and using communications channels corresponding to communications technologies which require only a single receive antenna at different points in time when interacting with said base station.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein wireless terminals which include only a single receive antenna interact with said base station using one or more communications channels corresponding to a communications technology which does not require multiple receive antennas.

11. A base station comprising:

means for transmitting signals corresponding to a plurality of different communications channels in parallel, at least two of said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies;

means for receiving information from a wireless terminal which supports said plurality of different communications channels; and

means for selecting between said communications channels, corresponding to different communications technologies, for use in communicating with said wireless terminal as a function of a rate of motion of said wireless terminal.

12. The base station of claim 11, further comprising:

means for controlling allocation of resources to said communications channels in response to the selection of a communications channel corresponding to a particular communications technology.

The base station of claim 12, wherein said controlling the allocation of resources is responsive to channel request information and creates a communications channel using a communications technology corresponding to the particular communications technology of the selected communications channel.

14. A base station comprising:

a transmitter for transmitting signals corresponding to a plurality of different communications channels in parallel, at least two of said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies;

a receiver for receiving information from a wireless terminal which supports said plurality of different communications channels; and

a selection module for selecting between said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies for use in communicating with said wireless terminal as a function of a rate of motion of said wireless terminal.

15. The base sta ion of claim 14, further comprising:

a resource allocation control module for controlling allocation of resources to said communications channels in response to the selection of a communications channel corresponding to a particular communications technology.

16. The base station of claim 15, wherein said resource allocation control module is responsive to channel request information and creates a communications channel using a communications technology corresponding to the particular communications technology of the selected communications channel.

17. A base station comprising:

a processor configured to control said base station to;

transmit signals corresponding to a plurality of different communications channels in parallel, at least two of said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies;

receive information from a wireless terminal which supports said plurality of different communications channels; and

select between said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies for use in communicating with said wireless terminal as a function of a rate of motion of said wireless terminal.

18. The base station of claim 17, wherein the processor is further configured to control said base station to:

control allocation of resources to said communications channels in response to the selection of a communications channel corresponding to a particular communications technology.

19. The base station of claim 18, wherein controlling the allocation of resources is responsive to channel request information and creates a communications channel using a communications technology corresponding to the particular communications technology of the selected communications channel.

20. A non-transitory computer readable medium embodying machine executable instructions for controlling a base station, the non-transitory computer readable medium comprising:

instructions which when executed by a processor cause said base station to transmit signals corresponding to a plurality of different communications channels in parallel, at least two of said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies;

instructions which when executed by said processor cause said base station to receive information from a wireless terminal which supports said plurality of different communications channels; and

instructions which when executed by said processor cause said base station to select between said communications channels corresponding to different communications technologies for use in communicating with said wireless terminal as a function of a rate of motion of said wireless terminal.
