Abstract

We have disclosed methods of controlling audio playback at a portable performance monitoring device. These methods may include playing music at a first volume, receiving athletic performance parameter data from a sensor at a portable performance monitoring device, reducing the volume of the music played while continuing to play the music, playing audio performance feedback with a portable performance monitoring device while music plays, and returning the volume to the first volume.

Claims

1. A method of controlling audio playback at a portable performance monitoring device, comprising:

playing music at a first volume with the portable performance monitoring device;

receiving athletic performance parameter data from an athletic performance sensor at the portable performance monitoring device;

reducing the volume of the music being played, and continuing to play the music at a reduced volume;

playing audio performance feedback with the portable performance monitoring device; and

returning the volume of the music being played to the first volume.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein playing the music at the first volume comprises playing the music via a pair of headphones coupled to the portable performance monitoring device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the athletic performance parameter data comprises acceleration data.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the athletic performance parameter data comprises position data.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the athletic performance parameter data comprises speed or pace data.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the athletic performance parameter data comprises distance data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the athletic performance parameter data comprises heart rate data.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the athletic performance parameter data comprises time data.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the athletic performance parameter data comprises receiving the athletic performance parameter data from an athletic performance sensor that is part of the portable performance monitoring device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the athletic performance parameter data comprises wirelessly receiving the athletic performance parameter data from a separate athletic performance sensor.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the audio performance feedback is based on the received athletic performance parameter data.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the audio performance feedback recites the type of parameter received from the athletic performance sensor.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the type of parameter received from the athletic performance sensor is heart rate data, and wherein the audio performance feedback recites heart rate feedback.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

determining calculated performance data based on the received athletic performance parameter data,

wherein the audio performance feedback recites the calculated performance data.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the type of parameter received from the athletic performance sensor is position data, the determined calculated performance data is pace data, and wherein the audio performance feedback recites the pace data.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein determining the calculated performance data occurs after receiving the athletic performance parameter data, before reducing the volume of the music, and before playing the audio performance feedback.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the athletic performance parameter data occurs during a first time period, wherein reducing the volume of the music occurs during a second time period after the first time period, wherein playing the audio performance feedback occurs during the second time period, and wherein returning the volume of the music to the first volume occurs during a third time period after the second time period.

18. A portable performance monitoring device, comprising:

an athletic performance sensor;

an audio output; and

a memory operatively coupled to a processor and storing computer readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the portable performance monitoring device to;

play music at a first volume via the audio output;

receive athletic performance parameter data from the athletic performance sensor;

reduce the volume of the music being played and continue to play the music at a reduced volume via the audio output;

play audio performance feedback via the audio output; and

return the volume of the music being played via the audio output to the first volume.

19. A method of providing athletic performance parameter data to a user, comprising:

playing audible content to the user at an audio playback device;

wirelessly receiving athletic performance parameter data from an athletic performance monitor at a first time;

pausing the audible content being played at the audio playback device at a second time occurring after the first time;

providing the received athletic performance parameter data to the user at the second time; and

resuming the playing audible content at the audio playback device at a third time occurring after the second time.

20. A method of providing audio performance feedback to a user, comprising:

playing audible content to the user at an audio playback device;

wirelessly receiving athletic performance parameter data from an athletic performance monitor at a first time interval;

determining performance feedback based on the received athletic performance parameter data at a second time interval occurring after the first time interval; and

providing the performance feedback to the user at the audio playback device at a third time interval occurring after the second time interval.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein determining the performance feedback comprises estimating performance information based on the athletic performance parameter data received from the athletic performance monitor.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises oxygen consumption.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises percentage of maximum heart rate.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises percentage of heart reserve.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises energy consumed.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises power exerted.

27. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises maximum heart rate.

28. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises lactate threshold.

29. The method of claim 21, wherein the performance information comprises VO₂ information.
