Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for calculating point values for users who participate in activities. An activity is first captured with a sensor. A processor classifies the activity by comparing a sensor signal to templates. Once the activity is classified, an activity factor is selected. Point values are then calculated as a function of the activity factor and duration of the activity.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

(a) capturing activity of a user with at least one sensor;

(b) classifying the captured activity;

(c) determining an activity factor corresponding to the classified activity; and

(d) at a processor calculating a point value by multiplying the activity factor by a duration of the activity.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein (a) comprises capturing the activity of the user with a wrist-worn device that includes the at least one sensor.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the accelerometer comprises a multi-axis accelerometer.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the accelerometer comprises a 3 axis accelerometer.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein (b) comprises comparing at least one signal from the at least one sensor to activity templates.

7. The method of claim 6. wherein at least one template is created by a user.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the activity templates include a template for walking and a template for running.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein (b) comprises comparing at least one signal from the at least one sensor to activity templates using a best match approach.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein (b) comprises comparing at least one signal from the at least one sensor to activity templates using a best match approach and a leaving an activity unclassified if there is not a sufficient match.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein point totals are calculated daily, weekly and monthly.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising disregarding an activity if an activity factor does not exceed a threshold.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the threshold is associated with a game.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the threshold is specific to the game.

15. An activity tracking device comprising:

at least one sensor;

a processor;

a tangible memory containing computer-executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the device to perform the steps comprising;

(a) capturing activity of a user with at least one sensor;

(b) classifying the captured activity;

(c) determining an activity factor corresponding to the classified activity; and

(d) at a processor calculating a point value by multiplying the activity factor by a duration of the activity.

16. The activity tracking device of claim 15, wherein the at least one sensor is configured to be worn a wrist of a user.

17. The activity tracking device of claim 15, wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer.

18. The activity tracking device of claim 15, wherein the accelerometer comprises a multi-axis accelerometer.

19. The activity tracking device of claim 15, wherein (b) comprises comparing at least one signal from the at least one sensor to activity templates.

20. A method of measuring activity comprising:

(a) capturing activity of a user with at least one sensor attached to a wrist of the user;

(b) classifying the captured activity;

(c) determining an activity factor corresponding to the classified activity;

(d) disregarding the activity if the activity factor does not exceed a threshold; and

(e) when the activity factor exceeds a threshold, at a processor calculating a point value by multiplying the activity factor by a duration of the activity.
