Abstract
A local content server system (LCS) for creating a secure environment for digital content is disclosed, which system comprises: a communications port in communication for connecting the LCS via a network to at least one Secure Electronic Content Distributor (SECD), which SECD is capable of storing a plurality of data sets, is capable of receiving a request to transfer at least one content data set, and is capable of transmitting the at least one content data set in a secured transmission; a rewritable storage medium whereby content received from outside the LCS may be stored and retrieved; a domain processor that imposes rules and procedures for content being transferred between the LCS and devices outside the LCS; and a programmable address module which can be programmed with an identification code uniquely associated with the LCS. The LCS is provided with rules and procedures for accepting and transmitting content data.

32. A method for storing, degrading and storing, or not storing data, comprising:
-
providing a device comprising a local content server (LCS); wherein said LCS comprises a communication port, non-transient LCS storage media, and a processor; said LCS reading data from a rewriteable medium; said LCS determining if a watermark is present in the data read from the rewritable medium, thereby making a watermark determination; if said watermark determination indicates a watermark is present, said LCS determining if said watermark matches the LCS, thereby making a watermark-LCS match determination; if said watermark-LCS match determination indicates a match, said LCS storing said data in encrypted form in said non-transient LCS storage media; if said watermark determination indicates a watermark is not present, said LCS first dedgrading said data to a lower quality degraded data, and second said LCS storing said degraded data in encrypted form in said non-transient LCS storage media; and if said watermark-LCS match determination indicates no match, said LCS not storing said data in said non-transient LCS storage media. - View Dependent Claims (33)

34. A method for storing, degrading and storing, or not storing data, comprising:
-
providing a device comprising a local content server (LCS); wherein said LCS comprises a communication port, non-transient LCS storage media, and a processor; said LCS reading data from a read only medium; said LCS determining if a watermark is present in the data read from the rewritable medium, thereby making a watermark determination; if said watermark determination indicates a watermark is present, said LCS determining if said watermark matches the LCS, thereby making a watermark-LCS match determination; if said watermark-LCS match determination indicates a match, said LCS storing said data in non-transient LCS storage media, in non transient encrypted form; if said watermark determination indicates a watermark is not present, said LCS determining if said ROM has a method for verifying originality of said data read from said read only medium, thereby making an originality determination; if said originality determination indicates said data is original, said LCS storing said data in encrypted form in said non-transient LCS storage media; and if said originality determination does not indicate said data is original, said LCS first degrading said data to thereby provide degraded data, and then, second, storing said degraded data in encrypted form in said non-transient LCS storage media. - View Dependent Claims (35)

36. A device comprising local content server system (LCS), wherein:
-
said LCS comprises an LCS communications port, an LCS storage unit for storing digital data, and an LCS domain processor for processing digital data; wherein said LCS stores an LCS identification code associated with said LCS; wherein said LCS stores a plurality of rules for processing a data set; wherein said LCS is configured to receive via said communications port a first data set that includes data defining first content; wherein said LCS is configured to use said domain processor to determine, upon receipt by said LCS of said first data set via said communications port, from inspection of said first data set, a first data set status value of said first data set to be at least one of unsecure, secure, and legacy; wherein said LCS is configured to use said first data set status value to determine which of a set of said plurality of rules to apply to process said first data set prior to storage of a processed second data set resulting from processing of said first data set, in said LCS storage unit; and wherein said LCS is configured to store said processed second data set in said LCS storage unit in encrypted form. - View Dependent Claims (37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45)
