Abstract

Improved methods, systems, and devices for managing communications are provided. A user device may display all ongoing communications so that a user can visualize the communications network or some subset thereof (e.g., a subgroup or group of users). A system may maintain the user device in an instant ready-on mode of communication with the other user devices. A user may then initiate communications with a subgroup (e.g., a pair) or group without initiating a new connection. Accordingly, a user can simultaneously and fluidly communicate at the subgroup level, at the group level, or at the inter-group level. Moreover, users can function as independent actors that can freely form and leave subgroups as well as groups.

40. A method for facilitating dynamic communications amongst multiple users, the method comprising:

receiving video communications, the video communications being sent by a transmitting device and directed to a receiving device;

determining a communication mode applicable to each of the transmitting and receiving devices, the communication mode being one of;

an instant ready-on mode, an intermediate mode, and an active mode;

determining an available bandwidth of at least one of the transmitting and receiving devices; and

deriving contextual communications from the video communications based on the determined communication mode and the determined available bandwidth.

41. The method of claim 40 further comprising:

transmitting the contextual communications to the receiving device.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein the instant ready-on mode enables the transmitting device to initiate a communication with the receiving device via a pre-existing communication link between the transmitting and receiving devices.

43. The method of claim 40, wherein the instant ready-on mode enables the receiving device to receive contextual communications that comprise presence information about a user of the transmitting device.

44. The method of claim 40, wherein the intermediate mode enables the receiving device to receive contextual communications that comprise indicators representing communication activity between a user of the transmitting device and other users.

45. The method of claim 40, wherein the active mode enables the receiving device to receive contextual communications that comprise the video communications.

46. The method of claim 40, wherein, when the available bandwidth is minimal, the contextual communications comprises a periodically updated image derived from the video communications.

47. The method of claim 46, wherein the periodically updated image is updated at a frequency based on the available bandwidth.

48. The method of claim 40, wherein, when the available bandwidth is minimal, the contextual communications comprises a low-resolution video derived from the video communications.

49. The method of claim 40, wherein, when the available bandwidth is minimal, the contextual communications comprises a grayscale video derived from the video communications.

50. The method of claim 40, wherein, when the available bandwidth is substantial, the contextual communications comprises high-resolution, color video at a standard refresh rate.

51. A system for facilitating communications amongst multiple users, the system comprising:

a receiver configured to receive video communications from a transmitting device, the video communications being directed to a receiving device; and

a processor configured to;

determine a communication mode applicable to each of the transmitting and receiving devices, the communication mode being one of;

an instant ready-on mode, an intermediate mode, and an active mode;

determine an available bandwidth of at least one of the transmitting and receiving devices; and

derive contextual communications from the video communications based on the determined communication mode and the determined available bandwidth.

52. The system of claim 51, wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the contextual communications to the receiving device.

53. The system of claim 51, wherein the instant ready-on mode enables the transmitting device to initiate a communication with the receiving device via a pre-existing communication link between the transmitting and receiving devices.

54. The system of claim 51, wherein the instant ready-on mode enables the receiving device to receive contextual communications that comprise presence information about a user of the transmitting device.

55. The system of claim 51, wherein the intermediate mode enables the receiving device to receive contextual communications that comprise indicators representing communication activity of a user of the transmitting device with other users.

56. The system of claim 51, wherein the active mode enables the receiving device to receive contextual communications that comprise the video communications.

57. The system of claim 51, wherein, when the available bandwidth is minimal, the contextual communications comprises a periodically updated image derived from the video communications.

58. The system of claim 57, wherein the periodically updated image is updated at a frequency based on the available bandwidth.

59. The system of claim 51, wherein, when the available bandwidth is minimal, the contextual communications comprises a low-resolution video derived from the video communications.

60. The system of claim 51, wherein, when the available bandwidth is minimal, the contextual communications comprises a grayscale video derived from the video communications.

61. The system of claim 51, when the available bandwidth is substantial, the contextual communications comprises high-resolution, color video at a standard refresh rate.

62. A method for facilitating communications between multiple devices, the method comprising:

receiving video communications, the video communications being sent by a transmitting device and directed to a receiving device;

determining a communication mode of a plurality of user-selectable communication modes between the transmitting and receiving devices; and

deriving contextual communications from the video communications, the contextual communications being based on the determined communication mode.

63. The method of claim 62, where the communication mode comprises one of:

an instant-ready-on mode, an intermediate mode, and an active mode.

64. The method of claim 62, where the contextual communications comprises presence information about a user of the transmitting device.

65. The method of claim 62, wherein the contextual communications comprise indicators representing communication activity of a user of the transmitting device with other users.

66. The method of claim 62, wherein the contextual communications comprises the entirety of the video communications.
