1. A method for salvaging blood comprising:

  • removing a first disposable-set component from its hermetically sealed package, the first disposable set including a reservoir for collecting shed blood and a quick-connect coupling, wherein the reservoir includes a collection port for permitting shed blood to be drawn from a site into the reservoir and an outlet port for permitting blood to be drawn from the reservoir;

    collecting a volume of shed blood in the reservoir of the first disposable-set component;

    monitoring the volume of shed blood in the reservoir; and

    if the volume of shed blood reaches a threshold, performing the following steps;

    removing a second disposable set component from its hermetically sealed package, the second disposable set including a separation chamber for separating a blood component from other fluids and a quick connect coupling for connecting the separation chamber to the collection reservoir;

    connecting the first disposable set component'"'"'s coupling to the second disposable set'"'"'s coupling;

    drawing shed blood from the reservoir into the separation chamber of the second disposable-set component; and

    separating a blood component from other fluids in the separation chamber.
