Abstract

A system and method for minimizing load shed during restoration after a fault in a power distribution network includes collecting customer prioritization data for a set of customers and calculating an inconvenience factor from the customer prioritization data on each customer in the set of customers. A load reduction required for restoration is determined, and at least one zone to be isolated from the power distribution network based the load reduction and the inconvenience factor is identified. The identified zone may then be isolated from the distribution network. The customer prioritization data may include customer priority data, customer load data, customer back-up device data, customer available back-up time, data related to willingness of customer to use their back-up device.

Claims

1. A method of minimizing load shed during restoration after a fault in a power distribution network comprising:

collecting customer prioritization data for a set of customers;

calculating an inconvenience factor from the customer prioritization data on each customer in the set of customers;

determining a load reduction required for restoration; and

identifying at least one zone to be isolated from the power distribution network based the load reduction and the inconvenience factor.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising maintaining a database comprising data relating to back-up devices available to customers, customers willingness to use the back-up devices.

The method of claim 1 wherein the customer prioritization data comprises one or more data selected from the group including customer priority data, customer load data, customer back-up device data, customer available back-up time, data related to willingness of customer to use their back-up device.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the inconvenience factor comprises a factor calculated from an estimated outage time, a customer'"'"'s back-up time, a factor of willingness of customer to use back-up devices, and a customer'"'"'s priority for the estimated outage time.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the inconvenience factor comprises a customer effective interruption time divided by a customer priority for estimated outage time.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising isolating the at least one zone from the network.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises at least one zone served by a feeder line.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises a set of customers located between two switches in the network.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises at least one customer.

10. A system for minimizing load shed during restoration after a fault in a power distribution network comprising:

a computer;

at least one subsystem that collects customer prioritization data for a set of customers;

at least one subsystem that calculates an inconvenience factor from the customer prioritization data on each customer in the set of customers;

at least one subsystem that determines a load reduction required for restoration;

at least one subsystem that determines at least one zone to be isolated from the power distribution network based the load reduction and the inconvenience factor.

11. The system of claim 10 further comprising a database comprising data relating to back-up devices available to customers and customer'"'"'s willingness to use the back-up devices.

The system of claim 10 wherein the customer prioritization data comprises one or more data selected from the group including customer priority data, customer load data, customer back-up device data, customer available back-up time, and data related to willingness of customer to use their back-up device.

13. The system of claim 10 wherein the inconvenience factor comprises a factor calculated from an estimated outage time, a customer'"'"'s back-up time, a factor of willingness of customer to use back-up devices, and a customer'"'"'s priority for the estimated outage time.

14. The system of claim 10 wherein the inconvenience factor comprises a customer effective interruption time divided by a customer priority for estimated outage time.

15. The system of claim 10 further comprising at least one subsystem that isolates the at least one zone from the network.

16. The system of claim 10 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises at least one zone served by a feeder line.

17. The system of claim 10 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprise a set of customers located between two switches in the network.

18. The system of claim 10 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises at least one customer.

19. Non-transitory computer readable media for instructing the determination of priorities for instructing the isolation of customers to minimize load shed during restoration after a fault in a power distribution network comprising computer readable instructions to:

collect customer prioritization data for a set of customers;

calculate an inconvenience factor from the customer prioritization data on each customer in the set of customers;

determine a load reduction required for restoration; and

identify at least one zone to be isolated from the power distribution network based the load reduction and the inconvenience factor.

20. The computer readable media of claim 19 further comprising instructions to maintain a database comprising data relating to back-up devices available to customers and customers willingness to use the back-up devices.

The computer readable media of claim 19 wherein the customer prioritization data comprise one or more data set selected from the group including customer priority data, customer load data, customer back-up device data, customer available back-up time, data related to willingness of customer to use their back-up device.

22. The computer readable media of claim 19 wherein the inconvenience factor comprises a factor calculated from an estimated outage time, a customer'"'"'s back-up time, a factor of willingness of customer to use back-up devices, and customer'"'"'s priority for the estimated outage time.

23. The computer readable media of claim 19 wherein the inconvenience factor comprises a customer effective interruption time divided by a customer priority for estimated outage time.

24. The computer readable media of claim 19 further comprising instructions to isolate the at least one zone from the network.

25. The computer readable media of claim 19 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises at least one zone served by a feeder line.

26. The computer readable media of claim 19 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprise a set of customers located between two switches in the network.

27. The computer readable media of claim 19 wherein the at least one zone to be isolated comprises at least one customer.
