Abstract

Methods for facilitating safe use of a medical item are provided. In one aspect, a method includes receiving a first identifier for a medical entity located in an institution. The medical entity includes at least one of a patient, medical device, medical location, or medical item. The method also includes receiving a second identifier for a first course of action associated with the medical entity. The method further includes generating, based on a history of the medical entity and the first course of action associated with the medical entity, a second course of action for the medical entity, and providing a notification to a device indicating the second course of action. Systems and machine-readable media are also provided.

Claims

1. A method for facilitating safe use of a medical item, the method comprising:

receiving a first identifier for a medical entity located in an institution, the medical entity comprising at least one of a patient, medical device, medical location, or medical item, and a second identifier for a first course of action associated with the medical entity;

generating, based on a history of the medical entity and the first course of action associated with the medical entity, a second course of action for the medical entity; and

providing a notification to a device indicating the second course of action.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the notification is provided by a monitoring system, and wherein the at least one of the first identifier, the second identifier, or the history of the medical entity is received over a network from a healthcare facility information system in a native message format of the healthcare facility information system and converted into an internal messaging format configured for use with the monitoring system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the notification comprises a message indicating a purpose for indicating the second course of action.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical item, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises a number of times the medical item has been dispensed.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to dispense the medical item, and wherein the second course of action comprises an instruction to restrict dispensing of the medical item.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical location, and wherein the history of the medical location comprises a rate of improvement of patients associated with the medical location.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical item, the method further comprising receiving a third identifier for a caregiver in the institution, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises a level of waste of the medical item by the caregiver.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to the caregiver to dispense the medical item, and wherein the second course of action comprises an instruction to restrict dispensing of the medical item by the caregiver based on the level of waste of the medical item by the caregiver.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical item, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises an average amount of time between dispensing of the medical item and the medical item being administered to a patient.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to dispense the medical item at a first level of urgency, and wherein the second course of action comprises an instruction to dispense the medical item at a second level of urgency based on the average amount of time between dispensing of the medical item and the medical item being administered to the patient.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical location, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises an incidence rate of illness associated with the medical location.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to order a first amount of medication, and the second course of action comprises an instruction to order a second amount of the medication based on the incidence rate of illness associated with the medical location.

13. A monitoring system for facilitating safe use of a medical item, the system comprising:

a memory comprising a history of a medical entity located in an institution, the medical entity comprising at least one of a patient, medical device, medical location, or medical item; and

a processor configured to;

receive a first identifier for the medical entity and a second identifier for a first course of action associated with the medical entity;

generate, based on a history of the medical entity and the first course of action associated with the medical entity, a second course of action for the medical entity; and

provide a notification to a device indicating the second course of action.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the at least one of the first identifier, the second identifier, or the history of the medical entity is received over a network from a healthcare facility information system in a native message format of the healthcare facility information system and converted into an internal messaging format configured for use with the monitoring system.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the notification comprises a message indicating a purpose for indicating the second course of action.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical item, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises a number of times the medical item has been dispensed

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to dispense the medical item, and wherein the second course of action comprises an instruction to restrict dispensing of the medical item.

18. The system of claim 13, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical location, and wherein the history of the medical location comprises a rate of improvement of patients associated with the medical location.

19. The system of claim 13, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical item, the system further comprising receiving a third identifier for a caregiver in the institution, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises a level of waste of the medical item by the caregiver.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to the caregiver to dispense the medical item, and wherein the second course of action comprises an instruction to restrict dispensing of the medical item by the caregiver based on the level of waste of the medical item by the caregiver.

21. The system of claim 13, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical item, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises an average amount of time between dispensing of the medical item and the medical item being administered to a patient.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to dispense the medical item at a first level of urgency, and wherein the second course of action comprises an instruction to dispense the medical item at a second level of urgency based on the average amount of time between dispensing of the medical item and the medical item being administered to the patient.

23. The system of claim 13, wherein the medical entity comprises a medical location, and wherein the history of the medical entity comprises an incidence rate of illness associated with the medical location.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the first course of action comprises an instruction to order a first amount of medication, and the second course of action comprises an instruction to order a second amount of the medication based on the incidence rate of illness associated with the medical location.

25. A machine-readable storage medium comprising machine-readable instructions for causing a processor to execute a method for facilitating safe use of a medical item, the method comprising:

receiving a first identifier for a medical entity located in an institution, the medical entity comprising at least one of a patient, medical device, medical location, or medical item, and a second identifier for a first course of action associated with the medical entity;

generating, based on a history of the medical entity and the first course of action associated with the medical entity, a second course of action for the medical entity; and

providing a notification to a device indicating the second course of action.

26. A method for instructing a caregiver, comprising:

receiving a first identity of a caregiver at an institution and a proposed course of action for a medical entity;

generating, based on a history of the caregiver within the institution, a modified course of action; and

providing a notification of the modified course of action to the caregiver.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the history of the caregiver comprises a level of waste of a medical item by the caregiver.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the modified course of action comprises an indication of an action to decrease a level of waste of the medical item by the caregiver.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein the history of the caregiver comprises at least one error made by the caregiver with a medical item or patient.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the modified course of action comprises an indication of an action to decrease a likelihood of the error with the medical item, the patient, another medical item, or another patient.
