Abstract

A hardware input device is disclosed in which at least two modes of manual user input can be provided within the same surface area of the device, including actuating or pressing multiple keys or buttons etc. as well as touch and/or gesturing by the user. A disclosed embodiment has actuated keys/buttons with associated sensors for detecting actuation; a second set of sensors for detecting proximity e.g. of a user'"'"'s extremities is co-located on the input device. In one embodiment, infrared sensors for proximity detection are integrated with the traditional plastic keys/buttons of a computer keyboard or other personal electronics device. In some embodiments, the elevation of actuated input elements can be controlled by a processor, so that the physical configuration of keys/buttons available to the user can be dynamically reconfigured under program control. Methods are disclosed for using the input device to facilitate a heads-up style of interaction.

Claims

1. A hardware input device for facilitating an interaction between an electronic system and a user, the hardware input device comprising:

a plurality of input elements, each of the input elements being capable of actuation by the user and having an associated sensor for transmitting a first input signal to the electronic system in response to said actuation; and

a set of proximity sensors, for transmitting at least a second input signal to the computing system in response to an object whose presence is detected by at least one of the proximity sensors,

wherein one or more of the proximity sensors are co-located with one or more of the input elements.

2. The input device of claim 1, wherein the input elements comprise a set of keys on a keyboard.

3. The input device of claim 1, wherein the device is a wireless remote control for the system and the input elements comprise a set of buttons.

4. The input device of claim 1, wherein an elevation of one or more of the input elements is dynamically controllable by the system.

5. The input device of claim 4, further comprising a latching mechanism for selectively latching at least one of the input elements to a neighboring one or more of the input elements.

6. The hardware device of claim 5, wherein the dynamically controllable elevations of the selectively latched input elements are maintained in tandem.

The input device of claim 1, further comprising at least one gap element positioned in between at least two of the input elements, and whose elevation is dynamically controllable by the system so as to provide a substantially continuous surface when desired across the at least two input elements.

8. The input device of claim 4, wherein the dynamically controllable elevation of at least one of the input elements can be rapidly vibrated, thereby providing haptic feedback for the user.

9. The input device of claim 1, wherein one or more of the input elements can be selectively backlit to identify an associated function.

10. The input device of claim 1, wherein at least one of the proximity sensors detects whether or not the object is substantially in contact with the input elements.

11. An interactive electronic system, comprising:

a processor; and

a hardware input device communicatively coupled to the processor and comprising;

(a) a plurality of input elements, each of the input elements being capable of actuation by the user and having an associated sensor for transmitting a first signal to the processor in response to said actuation, and (b) a set of one or more proximity sensors, for transmitting a second signal to the processor in response to an object whose presence is detected by at least one of the proximity sensors,

wherein one or more of the proximity sensors are co-located in the hardware input device with one or more of the input elements.

12. The system of claim 11, further comprising a display responsive to the processor;

and wherein the processor is responsive to the second input signal to adjust the display to depict a position of the detected object relative to one or more of the input elements.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is programmed to physically reconfigure the input device by adjusting the elevation of the input elements in response to at least one of:

a user command and an application program context.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein physically reconfiguring the input device comprises changing the size and number of the input elements that can be individually actuated.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the reconfigured input device comprises one or more of:

a touchpad, a slider, and a scroll bar.

16. The system of claim 13, wherein the user command is a manual gesture recognized by the processor based on the signals of the proximity sensors.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is programmed to recognize a plurality of manual input gestures based on the signals of the proximity sensors.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein the hardware input device is a handheld wireless device for remotely controlling the system.

19. The system of claim 18 further comprising an inertial sensor, and wherein the processor is programmed to determine movement and/or orientation in space of the handheld wireless device based on one or more signals received from the inertial sensor.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the processor is programmed to infer an input command parameter based at least partly on the determined movement and/or orientation of the wireless handheld device.

21. The system of claim 11, wherein the processor is programmed to track a current position concurrently for each of a plurality of user extremities based on output of the proximity sensors.

22. A method for facilitating an interaction between an electronic system and a user, said electronic system including a display, an input device having one or more user-manipulated input controls, and one or more sensors for detecting presence of an object, the method comprising:

detecting, by the sensors, at least one extremity of the user located proximate to the user-manipulated input controls;

displaying, on the display, a visual depiction of a position of the user'"'"'s extremity relative to one or more of the user-manipulated input controls.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

determining a set of applicable choices for the user; and

associating each of the choices with at least one of the input controls;

wherein said visual depiction includes an identification of the choice corresponding to the associated user-manipulated input control.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising physically reconfiguring the user-manipulated input controls, based on the determined set of applicable choices.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein physically reconfiguring the input controls comprises modifying the size and number of a set of input elements that can be individually actuated.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein associating the choices includes assigning a plurality of choices to at least one of the input controls, and wherein the method further comprises allowing the user to select from among the assigned plurality of choices by displaying a visual identification for each of the assigned choices when an object is detected proximate to the input control to which the choices were assigned.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein displaying a visual identification for each of the assigned choices comprises cycling through said assigned choices by displaying each of the corresponding visual identifications one at a time.

28. The method of claim 23, further comprising tracking a current position concurrently for each one of a plurality of the user extremities, and the visual depiction includes a depiction of each of said current positions relative to the input controls corresponding to the applicable choices.

29. The method of claim 22, wherein the input device is a wireless handheld device for remotely controlling the system.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the user-manipulated input controls comprise one or more of:

a touch-sensitive screen and a set of buttons.
