Abstract

A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for: (1) receiving information regarding a plurality of past orders placed by health care providers at a particular health care facility; (2) using the information regarding the plurality of past orders to determine a set of most commonly prescribed orders for the health care facility; (3) converting the set of most commonly prescribed orders from a first format to a second format; (4) displaying the set of most commonly prescribed orders to a user in the second format; and (5) allowing the user to place a new order by selecting one of the most commonly prescribed orders.

Claims

1. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for:

receiving information regarding a plurality of past orders placed by health care providers at a particular health care facility;

using said information regarding said plurality of past orders to determine a set of most commonly prescribed orders for said health care facility;

displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to a user; and

allowing said user to place a new order by selecting one of said most commonly prescribed orders.

2. The computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein said step of displaying said most commonly prescribed orders to said user comprises displaying each of said most commonly prescribed orders as an order string that comprises a drug entity to be taken by a patient, a dosage of said drug entity to be taken by said patient, and a route of administration for said drug entity.

3. The computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein said user is a physician.

4. The computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein:

said step of receiving said information regarding said plurality of past orders comprises receiving said information in a first format;

said computer-readable medium stores computer-executable instructions for, before displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to said user, converting each of said set of most commonly prescribed orders from said first format into a second format; and

said step of displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to said user comprises displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders in said second format.

5. The computer-readable medium of claim 4, wherein:

said first format is a pharmacy order format; and

said second format is a prescribing physician order format.

6. The computer-readable medium of claim 5, wherein:

when in said prescribing physician order format, a particular order specifies a drug entity to be taken by a patient, a dosage of said drug entity to be taken by said patient, and a number of doses of said drug entity to be taken by said patient.

7. The computer-readable medium of claim 6, wherein:

when in said pharmacy format, said particular order specifies a particular pharmaceutical product that includes said drug entity.

8. The computer-readable medium of claim 7, wherein, when in said pharmacy order format, said particular order specifies how much of said particular pharmaceutical product should be provided to said patient at a particular time.

9. The computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein said step of converting each of said set of most commonly prescribed orders from said first format into said second format comprises:

determining a particular drug entity that is included in a particular pharmaceutical product;

determining a particular dose of said drug entity; and

determining a number of doses of said drug entity.

10. The computer-readable medium of claim 1, wherein:

said step of receiving said information regarding said plurality of past orders comprises receiving said information from a pharmacy database.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein said particular medical facility is a hospital.

12. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for:

receiving information regarding a plurality of past orders placed by a physician;

using said plurality of past orders to determine a set of most commonly prescribed orders for said physician;

displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to a user; and

allowing said user to place a new order by selecting one of said most commonly prescribed orders.

The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein said step of displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to said user comprises displaying each of said most commonly prescribed orders as an order string that comprises a drug entity to be taken by a patient, a dosage of said drug entity to be taken by said patient, and a route of administration for said drug entity.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein said user is said physician.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein:

said step of receiving said information regarding said plurality of past orders comprises receiving said information in a first format;

said computer-readable medium stores computer-executable instructions for, before displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to said user, converting each of said set of most commonly prescribed orders from said first format into a second format; and

said step of displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders to said user comprises displaying said set of most commonly prescribed orders in said second format.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein:

said first format is a pharmacy order format; and

said second format is a prescribing physician order format.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 16, wherein:

when in said prescribing physician order format, a particular order specifies a drug entity to be taken by a patient, a dose of said drug entity to be taken by said patient, and a number of doses of said drug entity to be taken by said patient.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 17, wherein:

when in said pharmacy order format, said particular order specifies a particular pharmaceutical product that includes said drug entity.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein, when in said pharmacy order format, said particular order specifies how much of said particular pharmaceutical product should be provided to said patient at a particular time.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein said step of converting each of said set of most commonly prescribed orders from said first format into said second format comprises:

determining a particular drug entity that is included in a particular pharmaceutical product;

determining a particular dose of said drug entity; and

determining a number of doses of said drug entity.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein:

said step of receiving said information regarding said plurality of past orders comprises receiving said information from a pharmacy database.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein:

said plurality of past orders placed by a physician comprises a plurality of past orders placed at a particular medical facility; and

said step of using said plurality of past orders to determine a set of most commonly prescribed orders for said physician comprises using said plurality of past orders to determine a set of most commonly prescribed orders placed at said particular medical facility by said physician.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 22, wherein said particular medical facility is a hospital.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein said step of using said plurality of past orders to determine a set of most commonly prescribed orders for said physician comprises determining a set of most commonly prescribed orders for said physician for a particular timeframe.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 15, wherein:

said first format is a prescribing physician order format; and

said second format is a pharmacy order format.
