Abstract

Different types of user inputs can be input by a user via a keyboard of an input device. These different types of user inputs include, for example, key strikes, multi-touch interactions, single finger motions, and/or mouse clicks. Touch information regarding the pressure applied to the keys of a pressure sensitive keyboard over time (or the contact area of the user input for other types of keyboards over time) is used to classify the intent of the user input as one of the various types of user inputs.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

obtaining touch information regarding a single object touching a common input area of an input device, the input device supporting multiple different user intents for the single object touching the common input area; and

determining, based on the touch information, which of the multiple different user intents is intended for the single object touching the common input area, the multiple different user intents including a key strike and at least one other type of input.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, the input device comprising multiple pressure sensors that sense the single object touching the common input area, and the obtaining comprising obtaining force information.

3. A method as recited in claim 1, the input device comprising a capacitive system that senses the single object touching the common input area, and the obtaining comprising obtaining contact information.

5. A method as recited in claim 1, the at least one other type of input comprising a multi-touch interaction.

6. A method as recited in claim 1, the determining comprising determining that a multi-touch interaction or a single finger motion is intended in response to the single object travelling a threshold distance across the common input area.

7. A method as recited in claim 1, the determining comprising determining that a multi-touch interaction or a single finger motion is intended in response to the single object having a threshold velocity across the common input area.

8. A method as recited in claim 1, the at least one other type of input comprising a mouse click.

9. A method as recited in claim 1, the input device comprising an input device that is physically separate from and communicatively removable from a computing device.

10. A method as recited in claim 1, the determining comprising determining that a key strike is intended in response to the single object touching the common input area comprising a sharp rise in force followed by a sharp decrease in force.

A method as recited in claim 10, the determining including defining an initial impact time duration beginning when pressure applied by the single object touching the common input area rises to a start threshold amount, and ending when the pressure applied by the single object touching the common input area drops to a local minimum or a stop threshold amount, the sharp rise and the sharp decrease in force occurring during the initial impact time duration.

A method as recited in claim 1, the determining comprising determining which of the multiple different user intents is intended by comparing the touch information to one or more graphs representing user input intents, and determining whether a key strike or at least one other type of input is intended based on an intent associated with the one of the one or more graphs with which the touch information conforms.

21. A method as recited in claim 1, the single object touching the common input area of the input device comprising a single finger of a user touching the common input area of the input device.

A method as recited in claim 1, the determining comprising determining which of the multiple different user intents is intended for the single object touching the common input area in the absence of another option or button selection by a user to indicate which of the multiple different user intents is intended.

An apparatus comprising an input device configured to provide an output that indicates touch information regarding a single object touching the input device, the input device supporting multiple different user intents for the single object touching the input device, the output being usable by one or more modules to automatically distinguish between the multiple different user intents in determining which of the multiple different user intents is intended by the single object touching the input device, the multiple different user intents including a key strike and at least one other type of input.

14. An apparatus as recited in claim 13, the input device comprising a pressure sensitive input device.

15. An apparatus as recited in claim 14, the touch information comprising information indicating changes in locations where pressure is applied to a keyboard of the pressure sensitive input device over time as well as changes in pressure applied to the keyboard over time.

17. An apparatus as recited in claim 13, the at least one other type of input comprising a multi-touch interaction.

18. An apparatus as recited in claim 13, the at least one other type of input comprising a single finger motion.

19. An apparatus as recited in claim 13, the apparatus including the one or more modules.

20. A method implemented in a pressure sensitive keyboard input device, the method comprising:

obtaining, at the pressure sensitive keyboard input device, touch information regarding a single object touching the pressure sensitive keyboard input device, the pressure sensitive keyboard input device supporting multiple different user intents for the single object touching the pressure sensitive keyboard input device; and

determining, at the pressure sensitive keyboard input device and based on the touch information, which of the multiple different user intents is intended for the single object touching the pressure sensitive keyboard input device, the multiple different user intents including a key strike and a movement, the determining including determining that a movement is intended in response to the single object travelling a threshold distance or having a threshold velocity, and determining that a key strike is intended in response to a force graph generated based on the single object touching the pressure sensitive keyboard input device having a shape that matches a force graph of a key strike.
