Abstract

An exhalation valve assembly that controls the pressure of exhaled gas in a ventilation system is described. The exhalation valve assembly includes an actuator module that may be fixed to the ventilation system and a valve module, removable for cleaning or disposal, through which the exhaled gas flows and that controls the pressure and release of the exhaled as to the environment. Other components may also be incorporated into the assembly Including a filter module, a flow meter and a condensate trap.

21. An exhalation assembly adapted to be removably and directly attached to an exhalation valve module attached to a ventilation system, the exhalation assembly comprising:

a filter module comprising a filter body containing filter media and having a filter inlet port and a filter outlet port and, wherein the filter module is adapted to be removably and directly connectable to an exhalation valve module, wherein the filter module, when attached to the valve module, filters all gas delivered to the exhalation valve module prior to the gas entering the filter inlet port of the exhalation valve module; and

a condensate trap including a trap body attached to the filter body, the condensate trap receiving the gas delivered to the exhalation assembly via a trap inlet port extending through a side of the filter body and adapted to be connected to an expiratory limb prior to delivery of the gas to the filter body, wherein the condensate trap holds the gas received in a condensate chamber for a first residence time based on the condensate chamber'"'"'s volume and gas flow therethrough and collects moisture that condenses from the gas during the first residence time,

wherein the filter module when attached to the condensate trap covers an opening of the trap body with the filter body to enclose the condensate trap and position the filter inlet port over a portion of the opening.

22. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, further comprising:

a valve module including a valve body and attached seal element, the valve body defining a valve inlet port providing access to a valve chamber and an exhaust port through which all the gas exits the valve chamber, the valve body having a valve seat opposite the attached seal element wherein displacement of the seal element relative to the valve seat controls gas pressure within the valve inlet port, wherein the valve module is configured to be removably and directly connectable to an actuator.

23. The exhalation assembly of claim 22, wherein when assembled the valve module is positioned vertically above the filter module.

24. The exhalation assembly of claim 22, further comprising a flow sensor contained in the valve body for monitoring a flow of gas between the valve inlet port and the valve seat, wherein all the gas entering the valve inlet port and exiting the exhaust port is monitored by the flow sensor.

25. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, further comprising:

a valve module including a valve body and attached seal element, the valve body defining a valve inlet port providing access to a valve chamber from the filter outlet port and positioned to receive a valve seat attached to the filter module and an exhaust port through which all the gas exits the valve chamber, the valve seat of the filter body is opposite the attached seal element wherein displacement of the seal element relative to the valve seat controls gas pressure within the valve inlet port, wherein the valve module is configured to be removably and directly connectable to an actuator.

26. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, further comprising:

a valve module including a valve body and attached seal element, the valve body defining a valve inlet port providing access to a valve chamber and an exhaust port through which all the gas exits the valve chamber, the valve body having a valve seat opposite the attached seal element wherein displacement of the seal element relative to the valve seat controls gas pressure within the valve inlet port, wherein the valve module is permanently attached to an actuator.

27. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, further comprising:

a valve module including a valve body and attached seal element, the valve body defining a valve inlet port providing access to a valve chamber from the filter outlet port and positioned to receive a valve seat attached to the filter module and an exhaust port through which all the gas exits the valve chamber, the valve seat of the filter body is opposite the attached seal element wherein displacement of the seal element relative to the valve seat controls gas pressure within the valve inlet port, wherein the valve module is permanently attached to an actuator.

28. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein a valve seat is integrated into the filter module.

29. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein the trap body is permanently attached the filter body.

30. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein the trap body is independently removable from the filter body.

31. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein the trap inlet port is adapted to direct the gas delivered to the exhalation assembly along an interior surface of a wall that defines the condensate chamber.

32. The exhalation assembly of claim 31, wherein when assembled, the wall that defines the condensate chamber of the condensate trap is exposed to ambient atmosphere.

33. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein the filter body is provided with at least one cover that creates a substantially trapped air space between the filter body and ambient atmosphere.

34. The exhalation assembly of claim 33, wherein the substantially trapped air space is heated by the ventilation system.

35. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein the trap body includes at least one transparent window.

36. The exhalation assembly of claim 21, wherein the filter media has a sealed bottom and a sealed top.

37. The exhalation assembly of claim 36, wherein the sealed bottom is positioned above the filter inlet port.

38. The exhalation assembly of claim 36, wherein the filter media is a hollow and cylindrical filter that effectively divides a filter chamber into two volumes of a first volume that receives unfiltered gas from the condensate trap and a second volume that collects filtered gas in an annulus at a center of the filter media, wherein all of the gas is filtered by passing through one or more sides of the hollow and cylindrical filter.

39. The exhalation assembly of claim 38, wherein the sealed top and the sealed bottom are sealed to an interior surface of the filter chamber.

40. A filter/trap module comprising:

a filter module comprising a filter body containing a hollow cylindrical filter media and having a filter inlet port and a filter outlet port and, wherein the filter module is adapted to be removably and directly connectable to an exhalation valve module, wherein the filter module, when attached to the valve module, filters all gas delivered to the exhalation valve module prior to the gas entering the filter inlet port of the exhalation valve module; and

a condensate trap including a trap body attached to the filter body, the condensate trap receiving the gas delivered to the filter/trap module via a trap inlet port and adapted to be connected to an expiratory limb prior to delivery of the gas to the filter body, wherein the condensate trap holds the gas received in a condensate chamber for a first residence time based on the condensate chamber'"'"'s volume and gas flow therethrough and collects moisture that condenses from the gas during the first residence time,

wherein the filter module when attached to the condensate trap positions the filter inlet port over an opening of the trap body, wherein the hollow cylindrical filter media has a sealed bottom creating an annulus within the hollow cylindrical filter media causing all of the gas to be filtered by passing through one or more sides of the filter media.
