Abstract

A catheter assembly is disclosed that includes a catheter adapter having a port disposed on its sidewall. A valve is coupled to the port to seal the opening in the port.

Claims

1. A catheter assembly, comprising:

a catheter adapter having a distal end and a proximal end and an inner lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end;

a port disposed on a sidewall of the catheter adapter, the port forming an opening between the inner lumen and an external environment; and

a valve coupled to the port and sealing the opening of the port.

2. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the valve is a two-way valve.

3. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the valve includes an elastomeric septum having a slit extending therethrough.

4. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the valve is a luer access valve and wherein a body of the port includes luer threads.

5. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein a body of the port includes luer threads and wherein the valve is coupled to a luer access connector selectively coupled to the luer threads.

6. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the catheter adapter further comprises:

a needle septum disposed within the inner lumen at a location proximal the port; and

a catheter coupled to the distal end of the catheter adapter.

7. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the catheter adapter further comprises a septum and a septum activator disposed within the inner lumen.

8. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the port is disposed at an angle of between about 15°

and about 90°

relative to the longitudinal axis of the catheter adapter.

9. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the valve is a ball valve or an iris valve.

10. The catheter assembly of claim 1, wherein the valve is an iris valve.

11. A catheter assembly, comprising:

a catheter adapter having a distal end and a proximal end and an inner lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end;

a septum disposed within the inner lumen of the catheter adapter;

a septum activator disposed within the inner lumen proximal the septum;

a port disposed on a sidewall of the catheter adapter, the port forming an opening between the inner lumen and an external environment; and

a valve coupled to the port and sealing the opening of the port.

12. The catheter assembly of claim 11, wherein the valve is a two-way valve.

13. The catheter assembly of claim 11, wherein the port is disposed at a location along the inner lumen that is proximal the septum within the inner lumen.

14. The catheter assembly of claim 11, wherein the valve is a luer access valve including an elastomeric septum having a slit extending therethrough

15. The catheter assembly of claim 13, wherein a body portion of the port includes one or more luer threads.

16. The catheter assembly of claim 11, wherein the catheter adapter further comprises a catheter coupled to the distal end of the catheter adapter.

17. The catheter assembly of claim 11, wherein the port is disposed at an angle of between about 15°

and about 90°

relative to the longitudinal axis of the catheter adapter.

18. The catheter assembly of claim 11, wherein the valve is a ball valve or an iris valve.

19. A catheter assembly comprising:

a catheter adapter having a distal end and a proximal end and an inner lumen extending between the distal end and the proximal end;

a septum disposed within the inner lumen of the catheter adapter;

a septum activator disposed within the inner lumen proximal the septum; and

a button extending outwardly from and coupled to a sidewall of the catheter adapter, the button coupled to the septum activator and configured to move the septum activator distally through the septum when the button is pressed.

20. The catheter assembly of claim 19, wherein the button is configured to be pressed inwardly towards the inner lumen, and further comprising a translating mechanism that translates the inward movement of the button to a distal movement of the septum activator to open the septum.
