Abstract

Some embodiments provide an image-editing application. The image-editing application uploads an image to a remote image hosting website. From the image hosting website, the application receives data that identifies the image on the remote image hosting website. The application uses the received data to identify when a user of the remote image hosting website has commented on the image. The application displays the user comments from the remote image hosting website in the image-editing application.

Claims

1. A machine readable medium storing an image-viewing application for execution by at least one processing unit, the image-editing application comprising sets of instructions for:

uploading an image to a remote image hosting website;

from the image hosting website, receiving data that identifies the image on the remote image hosting website;

using the received data to identify when a user of the remote image hosting website has commented on the image; and

displaying the user comments from the remote image hosting website in the image-editing application.

2. The machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the set of instructions for using the received data comprises sets of instructions for:

sending the received data to the remote image hosting website as a request for a comment stream;

receiving the comment stream; and

determining whether any comments in the comment stream are new comments.

The machine readable medium of claim 2, wherein the comment stream comprises a timestamp for each comment in the comment stream, wherein the set of instructions for determining whether any comments in the comment stream are new comments comprises sets of instructions for comparing the timestamp of a most recent comment to a timestamp of the last time the application accessed the comments for the image.

4. The machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the image-editing application further comprises a set of instructions for displaying a notification that new comments are available.

5. The machine readable medium of claim 4, wherein the notification is displayed as a number that indicates a number of new comments since the last time the application accessed the comments for the image.

6. The machine readable medium of claim 4, wherein the notification is displayed over a selectable item for viewing the comments within the image-editing application.

7. The machine readable medium of claim 1, wherein the set of instructions for uploading the image comprises a set of instructions for uploading a caption for the image to the image hosting website.

8. The machine readable medium of claim 7, wherein the image-editing application further comprises a set of instructions for receiving the caption as user input.

9. The machine readable medium of claim 8, wherein the user input comprises touchscreen input through a touchscreen keyboard.

10. A machine readable medium storing an image-viewing application for execution by at least one processing unit, the image-viewing application comprising sets of instructions for:

when displaying an image uploaded to an image hosting website by the image-viewing application, determining whether any users of the image hosting website have commented on the image after a last time comments were accessed through the image-viewing application;

when at least one user has commented on the image after the last time comments were accessed through the image-viewing application, displaying a notification item to indicate that new comments are viewable.

11. The machine readable medium of claim 10, wherein the set of instructions for determining whether any users of the image hosting website have commented on the image comprises sets of instructions for:

identifying that the image has been displayed in a graphical user interface (GUI) of the image-viewing application for at least a threshold amount of time; and

sending a request for a comment stream for the image to the image hosting website after the image has been displayed for at least the threshold amount of time.

12. The machine readable medium of claim 11, wherein the request comprises an image identifier that identifies the image in a database of the image hosting website.

13. The machine readable medium of claim 11, wherein the set of instructions for determining whether any users of the image hosting website have commented on the image further comprises sets of instructions for:

receiving, in response to the request, a comment stream for the image comprising a set of comments and corresponding timestamps; and

comparing a latest timestamp to a latest time at which a user of the image-viewing application previously accessed comments for the image through the image-viewing application.

The machine readable medium of claim 13, wherein the set of instructions for comparing the latest timestamp to the latest time comprises a set of instructions for identifying a number of comments later than the latest time at which a user of the image-viewing application previously accessed comments for the image through the image-viewing application.

15. The machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the notification item displays the identified number of comments.

16. A machine readable medium storing an image-viewing application for execution by at least one processing unit, the image-viewing application comprising sets of instructions for:

receiving an image identifier from an image hosting website for an image uploaded to the image hosting website by the image-viewing application;

automatically using the image identifier to download a stream of comments for the image from the image hosting website, the comment stream comprising a set of comments with corresponding timestamps;

comparing the timestamps to a most recent time at which a user of the image-viewing application accessed comments for the image; and

when at least one timestamp is more recent than the most recent time at which the user accessed the comments for the image, displaying an indication to the user that new comments are available for review within the image-viewing application.

17. The machine readable medium of claim 16, wherein the image identifier is received in response to the image-viewing application uploading the image to the image hosting website.

18. The machine readable medium of claim 16, wherein the image hosting website is a social media site.

19. The machine readable medium of claim 16, wherein the image is uploaded to a plurality of different image hosting websites by the image-viewing application.

20. The machine readable medium of claim 19, wherein the image-viewing application comprises sets of instructions for:

receiving an image identifier from each image hosting website to which the image is uploaded; and

automatically using the image identifiers to download streams of comments for the image from each image hosting website.

21. A machine readable medium storing an image-viewing application for execution by at least one processing unit, the image-viewing application comprising sets of instructions for:

displaying a notification to a user that the image-viewing application has downloaded new comments for an image from an image hosting website at which the image is hosted;

receiving a selection of the displayed notification; and

displaying a comments display area for (i) displaying comments for the image downloaded from the image hosting website and (ii) receiving input for new comments to upload to the image on the image hosting website.

22. The machine readable medium of claim 21, wherein the notification is displayed over a selectable item for accessing image information.

23. The machine readable medium of claim 22, wherein image information comprises Exif data for the image from the device that captured the image.

24. The machine readable medium of claim 21, wherein the selection is received through touch input of a selectable item displayed on a touchscreen.
