1. A near-eye display system comprising:

  • an image former configured to form a display image and to release the display image through a first exit pupil; and

    a waveguide having a back surface facing a wearer'"'"'s eye, a front surface opposite the back surface, and a partially reflective dielectric cladding arranged on the front and back surfaces, the waveguide being substantially transparent to external imagery received normal to the front surface, and configured to receive the display image from the image former and to release the display image through a second exit pupil larger than the first exit pupil.
