Abstract

The present invention relates to methods for use in the selective disruption of lipid-rich cells by controlled cooling. The present invention further relates to a device for use in carrying out the methods for selective disruption of lipid-rich cells by controlled cooling.

Claims

1. A treatment system for removing heat from subcutaneous lipid-rich cells in a target region of a subject, comprising:

a treatment unit configured to produce an energy field in the subject'"'"'s tissue and including a cooling/heating element configured to reduce a temperature of the target region such that the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells are damaged while non-lipid-rich cells of the subject are generally not injured.

2. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the treatment unit is configured to produce at least one of a substantially constant electric field or a substantially constant acoustic field.

3. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the treatment unit is configured to produce at least one of an oscillating electric field or an oscillating acoustic field.

4. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the treatment unit is configured to produce the energy field that reduces or eliminates crystal formation in the subject'"'"'s tissue while the treatment unit removes heat from the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells.

5. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the cooling/heating element includes a passage through which fluid circulates.

6. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the cooling/heating element includes a thermoelectric cooling element.

7. The treatment system of claim 1, further comprising a feedback mechanism configured to provide acoustical measurements, optical measurements, and/or mechanical measurements.

8. The treatment system of claim 1, further comprising a feedback mechanism configured to monitor crystal formation in the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells.

9. The treatment system of claim 8 wherein the feedback mechanism is operable to provide at least one of ultrasound imaging, acoustical measurements, optical measurements, and mechanical measurements.

10. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the cooling/heating element is configured to cool the lipid-rich cells to a temperature less than or equal to about 10°

C.

11. The treatment system of claim 1, wherein the cooling/heating element is configured to maintain an average temperature in a range of about −

15°

C. to about 5°

C.

12. The treatment system of claim 11, further comprising a detector in communication with the control unit such that the control unit controls operation of the treatment system based on temperature information from the detector.

13. The treatment system of claim 1 wherein the treatment unit is configured to cool the lipid-rich cells in the target region to a temperature in a range of about −

10°

C. to about 5°

C.

14. A treatment system for removing heat from subcutaneous lipid-rich cells in a target region of a subject, comprising:

a treatment unit configured to output energy to the subject'"'"'s tissue and to reduce a temperature of the target region such that the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells are damaged while non-lipid-rich cells of the subject are generally not injured.

15. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit includes an energy output element configured to output the energy and a cooling/heating element configured to cool/heat the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells.

16. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit is configured to output the energy to tissue that has been cooled by the cooling/heating element.

17. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit outputs the energy to the dermis and/or epidermis of the subject to reduce or eliminate crystal formation in the subject'"'"'s tissue.

18. The treatment system of claim 17 wherein the treatment unit is configured to reduce or eliminate crystal formation in the dermis and/or epidermis of the subject.

19. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit outputs electrical energy.

20. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit outputs acoustic energy.

21. The treatment system of claim 14, further comprising a detector device that monitors optical properties, electrical properties, and/or acoustic properties of the subject'"'"'s tissue.

22. The treatment system of claim 14, further comprising a temperature detector configured to output temperature information used to control operation of the treatment unit.

23. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit is configured to perform a combination of cooling cycles and heating cycles.

24. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit is operable to heat the target region after reducing the temperature of the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells.

25. The treatment system of claim 14 wherein the treatment unit is configured to cool the lipid-rich cells in the target region to a temperature of about −

10°

C. to about 10°

C.

26. A treatment system for removing heat from subcutaneous lipid-rich cells in a target region of a subject, comprising:

a treatment unit configured to produce at least one of an electric field or an acoustic field in the subject'"'"'s tissue and configured to reduce a temperature of the target region such that the subcutaneous lipid-rich cells are damaged while non-lipid-rich cells of the subject are generally not injured.

27. The treatment system of claim 26 wherein the treatment unit is configured to perform a combination of at least one cooling cycle and at least one heating cycle.

28. The treatment system of claim 26, further comprising a control unit programmed to command the treatment unit to cool of the target region and thereafter heat the target region.

29. The treatment system of claim 26 wherein the treatment unit comprises a cooling device configured to cool the lipid-rich cells to a temperature less than or equal to about 10°

C.

30. The treatment system of claim 26 wherein the treatment unit comprises a cooling device configured to maintain an average temperature in a range of about −

15°

C. to about 5°

C.
