Abstract

Systems and methods are described for controlling fan-only cooling duration following normal air conditioning operation. Following normal AC cooling, economical fan cooling is used. The duration of the fan cooling period is adjusted based on temperature measurements made during the previous cooling cycle that ended with fan cooling. An expected temperature drop to be provided by fan cooling as well as an expected time to achieve that drop is calculated based on prior measurements. The expected values are then used improve fan cooling for subsequent cooling cycles. In some cases, fan cooling is not initiated unless: (1) a time limit has an elapsed, such that sufficient condensation is allowed to form on the evaporator coil during the first phase, and (2) indoor relative humidity is below a predetermined threshold.

Claims

1. A method for cooling an enclosure comprising:

initiating a first phase of a first cooling cycle in the enclosure using an air conditioning system having a compressor, an evaporator coil and a fan adapted to pass air over the evaporator coil, the first phase including activation of the compressor and the fan;

subsequent to the first phase, initiating a second phase of the first cooling cycle wherein the fan is activated and the compressor is not activated;

measuring of one or more parameters during at least the second phase of the first cooling cycle; and

altering a duration of a second phase of a subsequent cooling cycle based at least in part on the measurements during the first cooling cycle.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the initiating of the first and second phases being controlled by a thermostat, and the altering and measuring being carried out by the thermostat.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the one or more measured parameters includes temperature.

4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the duration of the second phase of the subsequent cooling cycle depends on an expected temperature drop that is based at least in part on a measured temperature drop during the second phase of the first cooling cycle.

A method according to claim 4 further comprising maintaining temperature within the enclosure using the air conditioning system between an upper maintenance band temperature and a lower maintenance band temperature, wherein the second phase of the subsequent cooling cycle is initiated when the expected temperature drop is expected to cool the enclosure to about the lower maintenance band temperature.

6. A method according to claim 5 wherein the second phase of the subsequent cooling cycle is initiated when a measured temperature is equal to or less than a combination of the expected temperature drop, the lower maintenance band temperature and a predetermined value.

A method according to claim 4 wherein the duration of the second phase of the subsequent cooling cycle further depends on an expected amount of time for the expected temperature drop, the expected amount of time being based at least in part on an amount of time associated with the temperature drop during the second phase of the first cooling cycle.

8. A method according to claim 4 further comprising ceasing the second phase of the subsequent cooling cycle based on a measured temperature being above an upper limit, below a lower limit, or an elapsed time exceeding the expected duration by a predetermined amount.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein the initiation of the second phase of the first cooling cycle depends at least in part on an elapsed time for the first phase of the first cooling cycle exceeding a predetermined time limit.

10. A method according to claim 9 wherein the predetermined time limit is sufficient so as to allow condensation to form on the evaporator coil during the first phase of the first cooling cycle.

11. A method according to claim 1 wherein the initiation of the second phase of the first cooling cycle depends at least in part on a humidity measurement within the enclosure.

12. A method according to claim 11 wherein the second phase of the first cooling cycle is not initiated when a relative humidity exceeds a predetermined threshold.

14. A method according to claim 2 wherein the thermostat includes high-power consuming circuitry adapted to perform a plurality of high-power consuming activities, and low power consuming circuitry adapted to perform a plurality of low power activities, wherein the high power circuitry is allowed to enter an inactive state to conserve power within the thermostat while the lower power circuitry measures and records one or more parameters.

15. A method according to claim 2 further comprising during the second phase of the first and subsequent cooling cycles, displaying on the thermostat a message advising a user a fan cooling operation is active.

16. A thermostat adapted and programmed to cool an enclosure using a method according to claim 1.

13. A method according to claim A12 wherein the predetermined threshold is between 45 and 60 percent relative humidity.

17. A method for cooling an enclosure comprising

initiating a first phase of a cooling cycle using an air conditioning system having a compressor, an evaporator coil and a fan adapted to pass air over the evaporator coil, the first phase including activation of the compressor and the fan;

measuring relative humidity within the enclosure; and

subsequent to the first phase, when the measured relative humidity is below a threshold level, initiating a second phase of the cooling cycle wherein the fan is activated and the compressor is not activated.

18. A method according to claim 17 wherein the threshold is a predetermined threshold.

19. A method according to claim 18 wherein the predetermined threshold is between 45 and 60 percent relative humidity.

20. A method according to claim 17 wherein the initiating of the first and second phases being controlled by a thermostat, and the relative humidity measuring being carried out by the thermostat.

21. A thermostat adapted and programmed to cool an enclosure using a method according to claim 17.

22. A method for controlling cooling in an enclosure using a thermostat comprising

under control of the thermostat, initiating a first phase of a cooling cycle using an air conditioning system having a compressor, an evaporator coil and a fan adapted to pass air over the evaporator coil, the first phase including activation of the compressor and the fan;

automatically detecting if a fan control wire is connected to the thermostat; and

subsequent to the first phase, and when a connection of a fan control wire to the thermostat is detected, initiating a second phase of the cooling cycle wherein the fan is activated and the compressor is not activated.

23. A method according to claim 22 wherein the thermostat includes high-power consuming circuitry adapted to perform a plurality of high-power consuming activities, and low power consuming circuitry adapted to perform a plurality of low power activities, wherein the high power circuitry is allowed to enter an inactive state to conserve power within the thermostat while the lower power circuitry measures and records one or more parameters.

24. A thermostat adapted and programmed to cool an enclosure using a method according to claim 22.
