Abstract
A method of routing an electronic prescription to a non-participating dispensing pharmacy allows a patient the right to choose the pharmacy of their choice, while being able to take full advantage of the benefits offered by e-Prescribing. The current method provides any pharmacy with the ability to retrieve an electronic prescription without being a participating trading partner of an electronic prescribing network. The system accomplishes this through a method comprising the steps of creating an electronic prescription at a point of care location, transmitting said electronic prescription to the prescribing network, determining if the pharmacy is a participating trading partner, generating a secondary prescription version, hosting the electronic prescription on a secure web portal and transmitting an alert to the pharmacy containing the secondary prescription and a set of instructions for accessing the secure web portal. Furthermore, the network delivers a status of the delivery to the Point of care.
