Abstract

A system is configured to determine one or more breathing parameters of a subject, such as one or both of end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration and/or breath rate. The system is configured to make a plurality of preliminary determinations of an individual breathing parameter according to a plurality of different algorithms. A final determination of the breathing parameter is obtained by selecting one of the preliminary determinations based on therapy parameters, gas parameters, and/or other parameters that impact the accuracy and/or precision of the different algorithms.

Claims

1. A system configured to determine a breathing parameter of a subject receiving therapy, the system comprising:

one or more sensors configured to generate output signals conveying information related to one or more gas parameters of the gas at or near the airway of the subject; and

one or more processors configured to execute modules, the modules comprising;

a therapy parameter module configured to determine one or more parameters of the therapy being provided to the subject;

a breathing parameter module configured to determine a breathing parameter of the respiration of the subject, the breathing parameter module comprising;

a first breathing parameter sub-module configured to make a first preliminary determination of the breathing parameter based on the output signals in accordance with a first algorithm; and

a second breathing parameter sub-module configured to make a second preliminary determination of the breathing parameter based on the output signals in accordance with a second algorithm, wherein an impact of the one or more therapy parameters on the accuracy and/or precision of the first algorithm is different than an impact of the one or more therapy parameters on the accuracy and/or precision of the second algorithm; and

a selection module configured to select (a)(i) the first preliminary determination of the breathing parameter or (a)(ii) the second preliminary determination of the breathing parameter as a final determination of the breathing parameter (b) based on analysis of the first and second preliminary determinations to identify artifacts indicative of inaccuracy and/or imprecision in determination of a respective breathing parameter by the first and second algorithms of respective first and second preliminary determinations, wherein the artifacts comprise artifacts commonly present under conditions described by the one or more parameters of the therapy being provided to the subject.

The system of claim 1, wherein the selection module is further configured to determine a reliability metric for at least one of the first and second preliminary determinations of the breathing parameter that indicate reliability, and wherein the selection module is further configured to select between the first and second preliminary determinations based on the determined reliability metric.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more therapy parameters comprise one or more of a current therapeutic procedure, a current therapy delivery device, a context in which therapy is being delivered, or a subject parameter.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the breathing parameter is end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the breathing parameter is breath rate.

6. A method of determining a breathing parameter of a subject receiving therapy, the method comprising:

generating output signals conveying information related to one or more gas parameters of the gas at or near the airway of the subject; and

determining one or more parameters of the therapy being provided to the subject;

making a first preliminary determination of a breathing parameter based on the output signals in accordance with a first algorithm;

making a second preliminary determination of the breathing parameter based on the output signals in accordance with a second algorithm that is different from the first algorithm, wherein an impact of the one or more therapy parameters on the accuracy and/or precision of the first algorithm is different than an impact of the one or more therapy parameters on the accuracy and/or precision of the second algorithm; and

selecting (a)(i) the first preliminary determination of the breathing parameter or (a)(ii) the second preliminary determination of the breathing parameter as a final determination of the breathing parameter (b) based on analysis of the first and second preliminary determinations to identify artifacts indicative of inaccuracy and/or imprecision in determination of a respective breathing parameter by the first and second algorithms of respective first and second preliminary determinations, wherein the artifacts comprise artifacts commonly present under conditions described by the one or more parameters of the therapy being provided to the subject.

The method of claim 6, further comprising determining a reliability metric for at least one of the first and second preliminary determinations of the breathing parameter that indicate reliability, and wherein the selection between the first and second preliminary determinations is further based on the determined reliability metric.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the one or more therapy parameters comprise one or more of a current therapeutic procedure, a current therapy delivery device, a context in which therapy is being delivered, or a subject parameter.

9. The method of claim 6, wherein the breathing parameter is end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the breathing parameter is breath rate.

11. A system for determining a breathing parameter of a subject receiving therapy, the system comprising:

means for generating output signals conveying information related to one or more gas parameters of the gas at or near the airway of the subject; and

means for determining one or more parameters of the therapy being provided to the subject;

means for making a first preliminary determination of a breathing parameter based on the output signals in accordance with a first algorithm;

means for making a second determination of the breathing parameter based on the output signals in accordance with a second algorithm that is different from the first algorithm, wherein an impact of the one or more therapy parameters on the accuracy and/or precision of the first algorithm is different than an impact of the one or more therapy parameters on the accuracy and/or precision of the second algorithm; and

means for selecting (a)(i) the first preliminary determination of the breathing parameter or (a)(ii) the second preliminary determination of the breathing parameter as a final determination of the breathing parameter based on analysis of the first and second preliminary determinations to identify artifacts indicative of inaccuracy and/or imprecision in determination of a respective breathing parameter by the first and second algorithms of respective first and second preliminary determinations, wherein the artifacts comprise artifacts commonly present under conditions described by the one or more parameters of the therapy being provided to the subject.

The system of claim 11, further means for comprising determining a reliability metric for at least one of the first and second preliminary determinations of the breathing parameter that indicate reliability, and wherein the selection between the first and second preliminary determinations is further based on the determined reliability metric.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the one or more therapy parameters comprise one or more of a current therapeutic procedure, a current therapy delivery device, a context in which therapy is being delivered, or a subject parameter.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the breathing parameter is end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration.

15. The system of claim 11, wherein the breathing parameter is breath rate.
