Abstract

An image display apparatus and method of controlling the same are disclosed, by which a more convenient 3D (3-dimensional) user interface can be provided to a mobile terminal including a display unit capable of displaying a stereoscopic 3D image. The method includes displaying a first object on a display unit of the image display apparatus, partitioning the first object into a first plurality of layers, determining an inclination of the image display apparatus with respect to a reference and providing a prescribed 3D depth to each layer of the first plurality layers in response to the determined inclination.

Claims

1. A method of controlling an image display apparatus, the method comprising the steps of:

displaying a first object on a display unit of the image display apparatus;

partitioning the first object into a first plurality of layers;

determining an inclination of the image display apparatus with respect to a reference; and

providing a prescribed 3D depth to each layer of the first plurality of layers in response to the determined inclination.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

determining a location of a user via a camera of the image display apparatus; and

changing the prescribed 3D depth provided to each layer of the first plurality of layers in response to the determined location of the user.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

determining a location of a user via a camera of the image display apparatus; and

rotating each layer of the first plurality of layers in response to the determined location.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

generating a specific event;

displaying a second object corresponding to the specific event on the display unit;

partitioning the second object into a second plurality of layers; and

providing a prescribed 3D depth to each layer of the second plurality of layers in response to the determined inclination.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of causing each layer of the first plurality of layers to disappear before the second object is displayed.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

determining a presence of a pointer, the proximity of the pointer and a location of the pointer; and

when the determined location of the pointer approaches a specific layer among the first plurality of layers, removing the prescribed 3D depth from the specific layer.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the display unit comprises a touchscreen, and

wherein the method further comprises the steps of:

detecting a touch input to a region on the touchscreen corresponding to a specific layer among the first plurality of layers;

causing the remaining layers of the first plurality of layers to disappear from the touchscreen; and

extending the specific layer into a full screen.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the first plurality of layers includes at least one of an icon, a menu and a content.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the partitioning step is performed by a reference preset for at least one of the icon, the menu and the content or a user-set reference.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the partitioning step is performed in response to one of an inclination change of the image display apparatus, a command input via a user input unit of the image display apparatus and an occurrence of an event corresponding to an external signal.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the image display apparatus is a mobile terminal.

12. An image display apparatus comprising:

a display unit configured to display a stereoscopic 3D image selectively by including a binocular disparity generating means;

a first sensing module configured to detect a motion of the image display device;

a second sensing module configured to detect a presence of a pointer, a proximity of the pointer and a location of the pointer;

a camera; and

a controller configured to;

display a first object on the display unit,

partition the displayed first object into a first plurality of layers, and

provide a prescribed 3D depth to each layer of the first plurality of layers in response to one of an inclination of the image display apparatus with respect to a reference determined via the first sensing module, the presence the pointer proximity determined via the second sensing module and a location of a user determined using an image of the user taken via the camera.

13. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein the controller is configured to control each layer of the first plurality of layers to be rotated in a manner that a surface of each layer of the plurality of layers faces toward the determined location of the user.

14. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first sensing module comprises an acceleration sensor and a gyro sensor.

15. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein, when a specific event occurs, the controller is configured to display a second object corresponding to the specific event on the display unit and partition the second object corresponding into a second plurality of layers again.

16. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein the controller is configured to provide the prescribed 3D depth to each layer of the first plurality of layers to enable a surface of each layer of the first plurality of layers to become vertical with respect to a ground surface using the inclination determined via the first sensing module.

17. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein, when the location of the pointer determined via the second sensing module approaches a specific layer among a plurality of the layers, the controller is configured to remove the prescribed 3D depth from the specific layer.

18. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein, when the inclination of the image display apparatus detected via the first sensing module is changed, the controller is configured to partition the first displayed object.

19. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first displayed object includes a plurality of icons, and

wherein each of the first plurality of layers includes at least one icon from the plurality of icons.

20. The image display apparatus of claim 19, wherein the controller is configured to sort the plurality of icons into categories and each category is associated with a corresponding layer of the first plurality of layers.

21. The image display apparatus of claim 19, wherein the controller is configured to sort the plurality of icons based on frequency of use and assign the plurality of icons to the first plurality of layers such that most frequently used icons are arranged on one layer of the first plurality of layers closest to the location of the user determined via the camera.

22. The image display apparatus of claim 12, wherein the image display apparatus is a mobile terminal.

23. A method of controlling a mobile terminal, comprising the steps of:

displaying, by a controller of the mobile terminal, at least one 3D object as a stereoscopic 3D image of a binocular disparity type on a display of the mobile terminal when a first condition is met;

displaying, by the controller, the at least one 3D object as a stereoscopic 2D image on the display of the mobile terminal when a second condition is met; and

displaying, by the controller, the at least one 3D object as a planar image on the display of the mobile terminal when a third condition is met.
