Abstract

The present disclosure is a novel utility of a software defined radio (SDR) based Distributed Antenna System (DAS) that is field reconfigurable and support multi-modulation schemes (modulation-independent), multi-carriers, multi-frequency bands and multi-channels. More specifically, the present invention relates to a DAS utilizing one or more Daisy-Chained Rings of Remote Units. The present invention enables a high degree of flexibility to manage, control, enhance, facilitate the usage and performance of a distributed wireless network such as Flexible Simulcast, automatic traffic load-balancing, network and radio resource optimization, network calibration, autonomous/assisted commissioning, carrier pooling, automatic frequency selection, frequency carrier placement, traffic monitoring, traffic tagging, pilot beacon, etc. As a result, a DAS in accordance with the present invention can increase the efficiency and traffic capacity of the operators'"'"' wireless network.

Claims

1. A system for routing and switching operator RF signals, the system comprising:

a first digital access unit;

a second digital access unit interconnected with the first digital access unit via a bidirectional cable; and

a first plurality of remote radio units interconnected with each other and communicatively coupled to the first digital access unit, each of the first plurality of remote radio units configured to receive one or more downlink radio frequencies and to transmit one or more uplink radio frequencies.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the bidirectional cable comprises a fiber optic cable.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of remote radio units is interconnected with each other in a linear fashion.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of remote radio units is interconnected with each other and to the first digital access unit in a loop fashion.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of remote radio units is interconnected with each other via bidirectional fiber optic cables.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the first digital access unit is communicatively coupled to a first base station, and the second digital access unit is communicatively coupled to a second base station.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the first digital access unit and the second digital access unit are both communicatively coupled to a base station.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the first plurality of remote radio units comprises a first remote radio unit configured to transmit and receive a first number of channels, and a second remote radio unit configured to transmit and receive a second number of channels.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the first number of channels and the second number of channels are different.

10. The system of claim 1 comprising a second plurality of remote radio units interconnected with each other and communicatively coupled to the first digital access unit or the second digital access unit, each of the second plurality of remote radio units configured to receive one or more downlink radio frequencies and to transmit one or more uplink radio frequencies.

11. A system for routing and switching operator RF signals, the system comprising:

a first digital access unit communicatively coupled to a first base station;

a second digital access unit interconnected with the first digital access unit via a first bidirectional cable;

a third digital access unit interconnected with the first digital access unit via a second bidirectional cable; and

a first plurality of remote radio units communicatively coupled to the third digital access unit, each of the first plurality of remote radio units configured to receive one or more downlink radio frequencies and to transmit one or more uplink radio frequencies.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein each of the first bidirectional cable and the second bidirectional cable is a fiber optic cable.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the second digital access unit is communicatively coupled a second base station.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein each of the first plurality of remote radio units is directly connected to the third digital access unit.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the first plurality of remote radio units is interconnected with each other and to the third digital access unit in a linear fashion or in a loop fashion.

16. The system of claim 11 comprising a second plurality of remote radio units communicatively coupled to the third digital access unit, each of the second plurality of remote radio units configured to receive one or more downlink radio frequencies and to transmit one or more uplink radio frequencies.

17. The system of claim 16 wherein the second plurality of remote radio units is interconnected with each other and to the third digital access unit in a linear fashion or in a loop fashion.

18. A system for routing and switching operator RF signals, the system comprising:

a first digital access unit communicatively coupled to a first base station;

a second digital access unit interconnected with the first digital access unit via a first bidirectional cable;

a third digital access unit interconnected with the first digital access unit via a second bidirectional cable;

at least one remote radio unit communicatively coupled to the third digital access unit, the at least one remote radio unit configured to receive one or more downlink radio frequencies and to transmit one or more uplink radio frequencies.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the second digital access unit is communicatively coupled to a second base station.

20. The system of claim 18 wherein each of the first bidirectional cable and the second bidirectional cable is a fiber optic cable.
