Abstract

Systems and methods of controlling characteristics of messages in sub-1 GHz networks (e.g., IEEE 802.11ah networks) are disclosed. One or more data structures indicating tone scaling parameters may be stored at or accessible to transmitters and receivers. The data structures may be organized based on a frame format, a wireless network bandwidth, and/or the number of spatial streams in use at the wireless network. Information stored in the data structures may be used in generation and processing of messages communicated via the sub-1 GHz network.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

selecting, at a transmitter, one or more tone scaling parameters for use in communicating a packet via a sub-one gigahertz wireless network operating at a particular bandwidth, wherein the one or more tone scaling parameters are selected based at least in part on a frame format of the packet and the particular bandwidth;

generating the packet, wherein generating the packet comprises scaling one or more fields of the packet in accordance with the one or more tone scaling parameters; and

sending the packet from the transmitter to a receiver.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the sub-one gigahertz wireless network operates in accordance with an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11ah protocol.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more tone scaling parameters include, for each of a plurality of bandwidths:

when the frame format is a single user frame format;

a short training field (STF) tone scaling parameter;

a long training field (LTF) tone scaling parameter;

a signal field (SIG) tone scaling parameter;

a data portion tone scaling parameter; and

a multiple-input multiple-output long training field (MIMO-LTF) tone scaling parameter.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the SIG tone scaling parameter is different than the data portion tone scaling parameter for at least one of the plurality of bandwidths.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the one or more tone scaling parameters include, for each of a plurality of bandwidths greater than one megahertz:

when the frame format is a single user frame format;

a short training field (STF) tone scaling parameter;

a long training field (LTF) tone scaling parameter;

a signal A field (SIG-A) tone scaling parameter;

a signal B field (SIG-B) tone scaling parameter;

a data portion tone scaling parameter;

a multi user short training field (MU-STF) tone scaling parameter; and

a multiple-input multiple-output long training field (MIMO-LTF) tone scaling parameter.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the SIG-A tone scaling parameter is different than the data portion tone scaling parameter for at least one of the plurality of bandwidths greater than one megahertz.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the SIG-B tone scaling parameter is the same as the data portion tone scaling parameter for each of the plurality of bandwidths greater than one megahertz.

8. A non-transitory processor-readable medium storing:

one or more data structures for use during communication via a sub-one gigahertz wireless network, the one or more data structures indicating tone scaling parameters for a single user frame format and a multi user frame format,

wherein the tone scaling parameters include for the single user frame format;

a short training field (STF) tone scaling parameter;

a long training field (LTF) tone scaling parameter;

a signal field (SIG) tone scaling parameter;

a data portion tone scaling parameter; and

a multiple-input multiple-output long training field (MIMO-LTF) tone scaling parameter,

wherein the tone scaling parameters include for the multi user frame format for bandwidths of the sub-one gigahertz wireless network that are greater than one megahertz;

the STF tone scaling parameter;

the LTF tone scaling parameter;

a signal A field (SIG-A) tone scaling parameter;

a signal B field (SIG-B) tone scaling parameter;

the data portion tone scaling parameter;

a multi user short training field (MU-STF) tone scaling parameter; and

the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter.

9. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the single user frame format when the bandwidth is one megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter is equal to 6; and

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the SIG tone scaling parameter, the data portion tone scaling parameter, and the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 26.

10. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the single user frame format when the bandwidth is two megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter is equal to 12;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the data portion tone scaling parameter, and the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 56; and

the SIG tone scaling parameter is equal to 52.

11. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the single user frame format when the bandwidth is four megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter is equal to 24;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the data portion tone scaling parameter, and the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 114; and

the SIG tone scaling parameter is equal to 104.

12. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the single user frame format when the bandwidth is eight megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter is equal to 48;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the data portion tone scaling parameter, and the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 242; and

the SIG tone scaling parameter is equal to 208.

13. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the single user frame format when the bandwidth is sixteen megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter is equal to 96;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the data portion tone scaling parameter, and the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 484; and

the SIG tone scaling parameter is equal to 416.

14. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the multi user frame format when the bandwidth is two megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter and the MU-STF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 12;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter, the SIG-B tone scaling parameter, and the data portion tone scaling parameter are each equal to 56; and

the SIG-A tone scaling parameter is equal to 52.

15. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the multi user frame format when the bandwidth is four megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter and the MU-STF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 24;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter, the SIG-B tone scaling parameter, and the data portion tone scaling parameter are each equal to 114; and

the SIG-A tone scaling parameter is equal to 104.

16. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the multi user frame format when the bandwidth is eight megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter and the MU-STF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 48;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter, the SIG-B tone scaling parameter, and the data portion tone scaling parameter are each equal to 242; and

the SIG-A tone scaling parameter is equal to 208.

17. The non-transitory processor-readable medium of claim 8, wherein the one or more data structures indicate, for the multi user frame format when the bandwidth is two megahertz:

the STF tone scaling parameter and the MU-STF tone scaling parameter are each equal to 96;

the LTF tone scaling parameter, the MIMO-LTF tone scaling parameter, the SIG-B tone scaling parameter, and the data portion tone scaling parameter are each equal to 484; and

the SIG-A tone scaling parameter is equal to 416.

18. An apparatus comprising:

a memory storing one or more data structures indicating tone scaling parameters for a plurality of frame formats of a sub-one gigahertz wireless network; and

a processor coupled to the memory, the processor configured to;

select one or more tone scaling parameters for use in communicating a packet via the sub-one gigahertz wireless network operating at a particular bandwidth, wherein the one or more tone scaling parameters are selected based at least in part on a frame format of the packet and the particular bandwidth; and

generate the packet, wherein generating the packet comprises scaling one or more fields of the packet in accordance with the one or more tone scaling parameters.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the sub-one gigahertz wireless network operates in accordance with an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11ah protocol.

20. An apparatus comprising:

means for storing one or more data structures for use during communication via a sub-one gigahertz wireless network, the one or more data structures indicating tone scaling parameters for a single user frame format and a multi user frame format; and

means for selecting one or more tone scaling parameters from the one or more data structures based at least in part on a frame format of a packet and an operating bandwidth of the sub-one gigahertz wireless network.
