Abstract

A data collection system collects and stores physiological data from an ambulatory patient at a high resolution and/or a high data rate (“more detailed data”) and sends a low-resolution and/or downsampled version of the data (“less detailed data”) to a remote server via a wireless network. The server automatically analyzes the less detailed data to detect an anomaly, such as an arrhythmia. A two-tiered analysis scheme is used, where the first tier is more sensitive and less specific than the second tier. If the more sensitive analysis detects or suspects the anomaly, the server signals the data collector to send more detailed data that corresponds to a time period associated with the anomaly. The more specific second tier analyses the more detailed data to verify the anomaly. The server may also store the received data and make it available to a user, such as via a graphical or tabular display.

28. A system for monitoring a patient, the system comprising:

a controller configured to receive physiologic data about the patient;

a wireless transceiver provided in communication with the controller; and

a remote server configured for wireless communication with the wireless transceiver, and for executing a health care provider application program;

wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit a subset of the received physiologic data to the remote server,

wherein the remote server is configured to analyze the subset of the received physiologic data according to a first technique and send a signal to the wireless transceiver if the analysis indicates a health-related anomaly,

wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit a portion of the received physiologic data to the remote server, in response to the signal,

wherein the remote server is configured to analyze the portion of the received physiologic data according to a second technique, and

wherein the health care provider application program is configured to permit a health care provider to set control parameters used in at least one of the first technique and the second technique.

29. The system of claim 28, wherein the second technique has a higher specificity for the health-related anomaly than the first technique, and the control parameters include threshold values used in the first technique and the second technique.

30. The system of claim 28, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit the subset of the received physiologic data at a preset duty cycle.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the preset duty cycle is seconds.

32. The system of claim 28, wherein the health care provider application program is configured to permit the health care provider to set operating parameters used to define the subset of the received physiologic data.

33. The system of claim 28, wherein the controller is configured to communicate with at least one sensor coupled to a patient, and the controller is configured to receive the physiologic data from the at least one sensor.

34. The system of claim 28, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit the subset of the received physiologic data regardless of whether the subset is indicative of a health-related anomaly.

35. The system of claim 28, wherein the subset of the received physiologic data is characterized by at least one of:

a lower resolution than the received physiologic data, a lower sampling rate than the received physiologic data, and having been received from a different sensor than the received physiologic data for a corresponding time period.

36. The system of claim 35, wherein the health care provider application program is configured to permit the health care provider to set operating parameters used to define at least one of the lower resolution or the lower sampling rate.

37. The system of claim 28, wherein the signal from the remote server identifies a time period surrounding a time period corresponding to the health-related anomaly.

38. The system of claim 28, wherein the controller does not perform an analysis to determine if the physiologic data is indicative of a health-related anomaly.

39. The system of claim 28, further comprising a memory configured to store the received physiologic data, and wherein the controller, the memory, and the wireless transceiver are contained in one physical assembly.

40. The system of claim 39, wherein the physical assembly is a phone.

41. The system of claim 28, further comprising a memory configured to store the received physiologic data, and wherein the controller, the memory, and the wireless transceiver are contained in more than one physical assembly.

42. A system for monitoring a patient, the system comprising:

a controller configured to receive physiologic data about the patient;

a wireless transceiver coupled to the controller; and

a remote server configured for wireless communication with the wireless transceiver, and for executing a health care provider application program;

wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit a subset of the received physiologic data to the remote server, and

wherein the health care provider application program is configured to permit a health care provider to set transmission parameters used to control the transmission of the subset of the received physiologic data to the remote server.

43. The system of claim 42, wherein the transmission parameters include at least one of:

a transmission duty cycle;

a resolution of data; and

a sampling rate.

44. The system of claim 42,

wherein the remote server is configured to analyze the subset of the received physiologic data according to a first technique and send a signal to the wireless transceiver if the analysis indicates a health-related anomaly,

wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit a portion of the received physiologic data to the remote server, in response to the signal, and

wherein the remote server is configured to analyze the portion of the received physiologic data according to a second technique.

45. The system of claim 44, wherein the health care provider application program is configured to permit a health care provider to set control parameters used in at least one of the first technique and the second technique.

46. A method for monitoring a patient, the method comprising:

receiving physiologic data about the patient;

transmitting, from a transceiver to a remote server, a subset of the received physiologic data, wherein the remote server analyzes the subset of the received physiologic data according to a first technique and sends a signal to the transceiver if the analysis indicates a health-related anomaly; and

transmitting a portion of the received physiologic data from the transceiver to the remote server, in response to the signal from the remote server, wherein the remote server analyzes the portion of the received physiologic data according to a second technique,

wherein a health care provider sets control parameters used in at least one of the first technique and the second technique, via a health care provider application program.

47. The method of claim 46, further comprising storing the physiologic data in a memory.

48. The method of claim 46, wherein the second technique has a higher specificity for the health-related anomaly than the first technique.

49. The method of claim 46, wherein transmitting the subset of the received physiologic data is at a preset duty cycle.

50. The method of claim 46, wherein the subset of the received physiologic data is transmitted regardless of whether the subset is indicative of a health-related anomaly.

51. The method of claim 46, wherein a controller receives the physiologic data from at least one sensor coupled to the patient, and wherein the controller is provided in communication with the at least one sensor.

52. The method of claim 46, wherein the subset of the received physiologic data is characterized by at least one of:

a lower resolution than the received physiologic data, a lower sampling rate than the received physiologic data, and having been received from a different sensor than the received physiologic data.

53. The method of claim 46, wherein the signal from the remote server identifies a time period surrounding a time period corresponding to the health-related anomaly.

54. The method of claim 51, wherein the controller does not perform an analysis to determine if the physiologic data is indicative of a health-related anomaly.

55. The method of claim 51, wherein a wireless transceiver performs the transmitting steps, and the controller, a memory for storing the physiologic data, and the wireless transceiver are contained in one physical assembly.

56. The method of claim 55, wherein the physical assembly is a phone.

57. The method of claim 51, wherein a wireless transceiver performs the transmitting steps, and the controller, a memory for storing the physiologic data, and the wireless transceiver are contained in more than one physical assembly.

58. A method for monitoring a patient, the method comprising:

receiving physiologic data about the patient; and

transmitting, from a transceiver to a remote server, a subset of the received physiologic data;

wherein a health care provider, via a health care provider application program, sets one or more transmission parameters used to control the transmission of the subset of the received physiologic data.

59. The method of claim 58, wherein the transmission parameters include at least one of:

a transmission duty cycle;

a resolution of data; and

a sampling rate.

60. The method of claim 58, further comprising storing the physiologic data in a memory.

61. The method of claim 58, wherein the remote server analyzes the subset of the received physiologic data according to a first technique and sends a signal to the transceiver if the analysis indicates a health-related anomaly;

and further comprising;

transmitting a portion of the received physiologic data from the transceiver to the remote server, in response to the signal from the remote server, wherein the remote server analyzes the portion of the received physiologic data according to a second technique.

62. The method of claim 61, wherein the second technique has a higher specificity for the health-related anomaly than the first technique.

63. The method of claim 58, wherein transmitting the subset of the received physiologic data is at a preset duty cycle.

64. The method of claim 58, wherein the subset of the received physiologic data is transmitted regardless of whether the subset is indicative of a health-related anomaly.

65. The method of claim 58, wherein a controller receives the physiologic data from at least one sensor coupled to the patient, and wherein the controller is communicatively coupled to the at least one sensor.

66. The method of claim 58, wherein the subset of the received physiologic data is characterized by at least one of:

a lower resolution than the received physiologic data, a lower sampling rate than the received physiologic data, and having been received from a different sensor than the received physiologic data.

67. The method of claim 61, wherein the signal from the remote server identifies a time period surrounding a time period corresponding to the health-related anomaly.

68. The method of claim 65, wherein the controller does not perform an analysis to determine if the physiologic data is indicative of a health-related anomaly.

69. The method of claim 65, wherein a wireless transceiver performs the transmitting steps, and the controller, a memory for storing the physiologic data, and the wireless transceiver are contained in one physical assembly.

70. The method of claim 69, wherein the physical assembly is a phone.

71. The method of claim 65, wherein a wireless transceiver performs the transmitting steps, and the controller, a memory for storing the physiologic data, and the wireless transceiver are contained in more than one physical assembly.
