Abstract

The present teachings generally relate a delivery system having an implant retention mechanism. Specifically, the delivery system includes a delivery sheath, a delivery catheter, and a flexible or a rigid implant retention mechanism. The flexible implant retention mechanism includes an implant retention string having a fixed end and a free end where the free end extends from the fixed end, crosses a retention outlet of an implant, and extends proximally through a lumen of the delivery sheath. The rigid implant retention mechanism includes an implant retention wire having a fixed end and a free end where the free end extends from the fixed end, crosses a retention outlet of an implant, and extends proximally through a lumen of the delivery sheath.

Claims

1. A delivery system comprising a delivery sheath, a delivery catheter, and an implant retention mechanism,

wherein the delivery sheath comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an elongated lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the delivery sheath;

wherein the delivery catheter is slidably disposed within the delivery sheath, and the delivery catheter comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one elongated lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the delivery catheter, and

wherein the implant retention mechanism comprises an implant retention string or an implant retention wire each comprising a fixed end and a free end, and wherein the free end extends from the fixed end, crosses a retention outlet of an implant device, and extends proximally back inside the delivery system.

2. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the implant retention string is relatively flexible.

3. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the fixed end of the implant retention string or the implant retention wire connects to a portion of the delivery catheter.

4. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the fixed end of the implant retention string or the implant retention wire connects with a portion of the delivery sheath.

5. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the free end of the implant retention string or the implant retention wire extends proximally through the longitudinal lumen of the delivery sheath.

6. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the free end of the implant retention string or the implant retention wire extends through the longitudinal lumen of the delivery catheter.

7. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the free end of the implant retention string or the implant retention wire extends through a space between an outer surface of the delivery catheter and an inner surface of the delivery sheath.

8. The delivery system of claim 3, wherein the fixed end of the implant retention string attaches to the delivery catheter by wrapping at least partially circumferentially around a portion of the delivery catheter in one or more loops and being trapped by the delivery sheath.

9. The delivery system of claim 2, wherein the implant retention string is made from a polymeric material or a metallic material.

10. The delivery system of claim 9, wherein the polymeric material is selected from polyglycolic acid, polylactic acid, polydioxanone, aprolactone, synthetic polypropylene, polyester, and nylon.

11. The delivery system of claim 2, wherein the implant retention string is made from a silk.

12. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the implant retention string forms an exploding knot.

13. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the implant retention wire is relatively rigid.

14. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the implant retention wire is made from an elastic or a shape memory material.

15. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the free end of the implant retention wire is releasable secured to the delivery sheath and the delivery catheter by a dimensional interference.

16. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the free end of the implant retention wire has a larger outer profile than the remaining portion of the retention wire.

29. A method of delivering an implant comprising providing the delivery system of claim 1, providing an implant, wherein the implant is retained by the implant retention mechanism, deploying the implant to a desired site by using the delivery system, and releasing the implant.

17. A delivery system comprising a delivery sheath, a delivery catheter, and an implant retention mechanism,

wherein the delivery sheath comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an elongated lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the delivery sheath;

wherein the delivery catheter is slidably disposed within the delivery sheath, and the delivery catheter comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one elongated lumen extending from the proximal end to the distal end of the delivery catheter, and

wherein the implant retention mechanism comprises an elongated tube, an implant retention mandrel, and an implant retention wire.

18. The delivery system of claim 17, wherein the implant retention mandrel is slidably disposed within the elongated tube.

19. The delivery system of claim 17, wherein the implant retention wire comprises a fixed end and a free end, wherein the free end of the implant retention wire extends from the fixed end, crosses a retention outlet of an implant device, and extends proximally back inside the implant retention mechanism.

20. The delivery system of claim 17, wherein the implant retention wire is slidably disposed within a longitudinal lumen of the delivery catheter.

21. The delivery system of claim 17, wherein the delivery catheter comprises a retention wire cavity on a distal end portion of the delivery catheter.

22. The delivery system of claim 21, wherein the implant retention wire has a stowed configuration wherein a distal end of the implant retention wire remains inside the wire retention cavity.

23. The delivery system of claim 21, wherein the implant retention wire has a radially expanded configuration wherein the distal end of the implant retention wire expands radially outward away from the wire retention cavity.

24. The delivery system of claim 21, wherein the implant retention wire has a locked configuration wherein the distal end of the retention wire remains inside the wire retention cavity.

25. The delivery system of claim 21, wherein the implant retention wire has an unlocked configuration wherein the wire retention cavity releases the distal end of the retention wire.

26. The delivery system of claim 17, wherein the implant retention mechanism further comprises an elongated retention wire tube and the implant retention wire is slidably disposed within the elongated retention wire tube.

27. The delivery system of claim 26, wherein the elongated retention wire tube comprises an elongated lumen and a side opening.

28. A delivery system comprising a delivery sheath, a delivery catheter, and at least one implant retention wire, where

the delivery sheath comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an elongated lumen extending from the proximal end of the delivery sheath to the distal end of the delivery sheath,

the delivery catheter is slidably disposed within the delivery sheath, and

the at least one implant retention wire slidably disposed within a longitudinal lumen of the delivery sheath side by side to the delivery catheter.
