1. A method for determining the offset distance between a first surface and a second surface, the method comprising the steps of:
- obtaining and displaying at least one image of the first surface and the second surface;
determining the three-dimensional coordinates of at least three surface points on the first surface;
determining the three-dimensional coordinates of at least three surface points on the second surface;
determining a first reference surface based on the three-dimensional coordinates of the at least three surface points on the first surface;
determining a second reference surface based on the three-dimensional coordinates of the at least three surface points on the second surface;
determining a first point on the first reference surface;
determining a second point on the second reference surface; and
determining the offset distance between the first point and the second point.

A method and device for determining the offset distance between a first surface and a second surface is disclosed. The method and device determine a first reference surface, which is based on the three-dimensional coordinates of the first surface, and a second reference surface, which is based on the three-dimensional coordinates of the second surface. The offset distance is determined as the distance between a first point on the first reference surface and a second point on the second reference surface.
