Abstract

A first data item is transmitted from a source device to a receiving device with metadata that identifies a location where the data item resides on the source device. The receiving device generates a subsequent request for data items that reside at the location specified by the metadata provided with the first data item. The receiving device generates an output that is based on the data items received from the source device.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for transferring data items amongst computing devices, the method comprising:

responding, on a source device, to a user command to transfer a data item to a receiving device;

associating metadata with the data item, wherein the metadata identifies a location of the data item that is to be transferred;

transmitting the data item using a near field communication (NFC) link to the receiving device, the data item being transmitted with the associated metadata; and

subsequent to transmitting the data item, responding to a request from the receiving device by transmitting one or more additional data items that are provided at the location of the transmitted data item.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting one or more additional data items is performed using the NFC link.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting one or more additional data items is performed using a wireless communication medium other than the NFC link.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the location of the data item corresponds to a directory that is provided on the source device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein associating metadata with the data item includes structuring an NFC tag to identify the location of the data item on the source device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein responding to the request includes scanning the location specified with the metadata for data items that have a particular attribute.

7. A computer-implemented method for transferring data items amongst computing devices, the method comprising:

receiving, from a source device, a data item and metadata associated with the data item, the data item and metadata being received using a near field communication (NFC) link, wherein the metadata identifies a location on the source device where the data item is provided;

transmitting a request to the source device that specifies the location identified by the metadata;

receiving one or more additional data items from the source device; and

outputting content that is based on the data item and one or more additional data items.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the metadata includes an NFC tag that is provided with the data item.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the one or more additional data item are received using the NFC link.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein transmitting the request includes specifying a criterion for the source device to use in selecting the one or more additional data items from the location.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the criterion includes a file type.

12. The method of claim 7, wherein outputting content includes displaying an image from the data item, along with one or more thumbnails that are based on the one or more additional data items.

13. A system for transferring data items amongst computing devices, the system comprising:

a source device comprising;

a memory that stores a plurality of data items, and

a near field communication (NFC) interface,

a receiving device comprising;

an output device;

a near field communication (NFC) interface;

wherein the source device;

identifies, based on a user selection, a data item to transmit to the receiving device;

associates metadata with the data item of the user selection, the metadata identifying a location of the data item;

transmits the data item, with the associated metadata, to the receiving device using its NFC interface;

wherein the receiving device;

receives the data item and the associated metadata from the source device using the NFC interface;

transmits a request to the source device that specifies the location identified by the metadata;

wherein the source device responds to the request from the receiving device by transmitting one or more additional data items that are provided at the location identified by the metadata; and

wherein the receiving device outputs content that is based on the received data item and one or more additional data items.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the location of the data item corresponds to a directory that is provided on the source device.

15. The system of claim 13, wherein the metadata is provided as an NFC tag.
