1. A method of promoting content at a preference system comprising one or more processors, the method comprising:
- receiving content items submitted by at least one user of the preference system;
categorizing as an upcoming content item each submitted content item not previously received at the preference system;
displaying the upcoming content items in a secondary portion of an interface provided to users of the preference system for viewing content items;
receiving multiple preference events regarding the upcoming content items;
for each upcoming content item;
calculating a content reputation score for the upcoming content item;
making the upcoming content item a promoted content item if the content reputation score exceeds a threshold score; and
archiving the upcoming content item if it remains an upcoming content item for a threshold time period without being made a promoted content item; and
displaying promoted content items in a primary portion of the interface provided to users of the preference system for viewing content items.

Promoting a candidate content item included in a plurality of content items is disclosed. A preference event by the first user is detected. A plurality of user reputation scores is received. For the candidate content item in the plurality of candidate content items, a content reputation score is determined based at least in part on a portion of the received user reputation scores. A determination of whether to promote the candidate content item is made based at least in part on the content reputation score. The candidate content item is promoted if it is determined that the candidate content item should be promoted.
