Abstract

A system, in one embodiment, includes a drive having a housing, a stator disposed in the housing, a rotor disposed in the stator, and a programmable logic controller disposed inside, mounted on, or in general proximity to the housing. In another embodiment, a system includes a network, a first motor having a first integral programmable logic controller coupled to the network, and a second motor having a second integral programmable logic controller coupled to the network. In a further embodiment, a system includes a rotary machine having a rotor and a stator disposed concentric with one another, a microprocessor, memory coupled to the microprocessor, a power supply coupled to the microprocessor and the memory, and a machine sensor coupled to the microprocessor.

21. A motor control system, comprising:

a motor drive component configured to drive a motor in rotation for powering a load; and

an automation controller electrically coupled to the motor drive component and configured to control operation of the motor drive component;

wherein the automation controller is configured to cooperate with the motor drive component for autonomous control of the motor, and to report data to a remote control component via a network, and wherein the motor drive component and the automation controller are disposed in or on a common housing with a motor rotor and motor stator.

22. The system of claim 21, comprising at least one additional motor drive component, each motor drive component configured to drive a respective motor in a machine system, at least one additional automation controller, each automation controller being electrically coupled to a respective motor drive component and configured to control operation of the respective motor drive component, each automation controller being coupled to the remote control component via the network and configured to cooperate with the respective motor drive component for autonomous control of the respective motor, and to report data to the remote control component via the network.

23. The system of claim 22, wherein the automation controllers are configured to exchange data with one another via the network.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein the automation controller is configured to monitor and interpret sensor data.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the sensor data comprises voltage, or current, or power, or temperature, or vibration, or a combination thereof, of the motor drive component.

26. The system of claim 24, wherein the automation controller is configured to control operation of the motor drive component based on the interpreted sensor data.

27. The system of claim 21, wherein the automation controller is configured to coordinate operation of the motor drive component with other components of the system.

28. A system, comprising:

a network; and

a first motor comprising a first automation controller and a motor drive, wherein first automation controller is coupled to the network and configured to autonomously control operation of the first motor, and wherein the first automation controller is configured to read sensor data, interpret the sensor data, and control the first motor or the system based on the interpreted sensor data.

29. The system of claim 28, comprising a second motor comprising a second automation controller and a motor drive, wherein the second automation controller is coupled to the network and configured to autonomously control operation of the second motor.

30. The system of claim 29, wherein the first and second automation controllers are coupled to the network in series with one another.

31. The system of claim 29, wherein the first and second automation controllers are configured to coordinate control functions with one another.

32. The system of claim 29, wherein the first automation controller is configured to communicate the interpreted sensor data to the second automation controller, and wherein the second automation controller is configured to control the second motor based on the interpreted sensor data.

33. The system of claim 28, wherein the first automation controller is configured to communicate the interpreted sensor data with external components of the system.

34. A system, comprising:

a plurality of motors coupled to a machine system for powering loads in a coordinated manner in the machine system;

a plurality of motor drive components configured to drive respective motors in rotation for powering their respective loads;

at least one automation controller electrically coupled to a respective one of the motor drive components and configured to control operation of the respective motor drive component; and

a remote control component coupled to the at least one automation controller via a network;

wherein the at least one automation controller is configured to cooperate with the respective motor drive component for autonomous control of the respective motor, and to report data to a remote control component via the network, and wherein at least one of the motor drive components and the at least one automation controller are disposed in or on a common housing with a motor rotor and motor stator.

35. The system of claim 34, comprising a plurality of automation controllers coupled to respective motor drive components and configured to control operation of the respective motor drive component.

36. The system of claim 35, wherein each of the automation controllers is configured to report data to the remote control component via the network.

37. The system of claim 35, wherein the automation controllers are configured to exchange data with one another via the network.

38. The system of claim 35, wherein the automation controllers are configured to coordinate operation of the respective motor drive component with other components of the machine system.

39. The system of claim 34, wherein the at least one automation controller is configured to read sensor data, interpret the sensor data, and control the respective motor drive component based on the interpreted sensor data

40. The system of claim 39, wherein the sensor data comprises voltage, or current, or power, or temperature, or vibration, or a combination thereof, of the respective motor drive component.
