Abstract

An embodiment of wireless communication in a wireless sensor network (WSN) comprises selecting amount of information transmission from a sensor node utilizing a transmission parameter, wherein the transmission parameter indicates the amount of sensed information to discard from a transmission. Sensed information from a sensor node is transmitted based on the transmission parameter. Discarded sensor information is reconstructed at a receiver based on received sensor information and utilizing information correlation.

Claims

1. A method of wireless communication in a wireless sensor network (WSN) of sensor nodes, comprising:

selecting an amount of information transmission from a sensor node in a WSN utilizing a transmission parameter, wherein the transmission parameter indicates the amount of sensed information to discard from a transmission;

transmitting sensed information from a sensor node based on the transmission parameter; and

reconstructing discarded sensor information at a receiver based on received sensor information, utilizing information correlation.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining a transmission parameter based on a trade-off between energy savings and fidelity of the reconstructed information.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

determining the transmission parameter a priori.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

determining the transmission parameter in real-time.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

each sensor node determining the amount of sensed information transmission.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

utilizing a random phase shift for information transmission at a sensor node.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

each sensor node selecting the amount of sensed information transmission.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

a coordinator node assigning to each sensor node the amount of sensed information transmission for that sensor node.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

each sensor node transmitting based on assigned phase shifts from the coordinator node.

10. A computer program product for wireless communication in a wireless sensor network (WSN), the computer program product comprising:

a tangible storage medium readable by a computer system and storing instructions for execution by the computer system for performing a method comprising;

selecting amount of information transmission from a sensor node in a WSN utilizing a transmission parameter, wherein the transmission parameter indicates the amount of sensed information to discard from a transmission;

transmitting sensed information from a sensor node based on the transmission parameter; and

reconstructing discarded sensor information at a receiver based on received sensor information, utilizing information correlation.

11. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising:

determining a transmission parameter based on a trade-off between energy savings and fidelity of the reconstructed information.

12. The computer program product of claim 11 further comprising:

determining the transmission parameter a priori.

13. The computer program product of claim 11 further comprising:

determining the transmission parameter in real-time.

14. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising:

each sensor node determining the amount of sensed information transmission.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 further comprising:

utilizing a random phase shift for information transmission at a sensor node.

16. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising:

each sensor node selecting the amount of sensed information transmission.

17. The computer program product of claim 10 further comprising:

a coordinator node assigning to each sensor node the amount of sensed information transmission for that sensor node.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 further comprising:

each sensor node transmitting based on assigned phase shifts from the coordinator node.

19. A wireless sensor for a wireless sensor network (WSN), comprising:

a monitoring module for sensing information; and

a transmission module configured for transmitting sensed information to a base station based on a transmission parameter, wherein the transmission parameter indicates the amount of sensed information to discard from a transmission.

20. The wireless sensor of claim 19, wherein:

the transmission parameter is based on a trade-off between energy savings and fidelity of the reconstructed information; and

the base station reconstructs discarded sensor information based on received sensor information, utilizing information correlation.

21. The wireless sensor of claim 19, wherein:

the transmission module utilizes a random phase shift for information transmission.

22. The wireless sensor of claim 19, wherein:

the transmission module transmits based on assigned phase shifts.
