Abstract

A method and apparatus for quantitative imaging of the retinal fundus. The method for retinal health assessment comprises imaging the retinal fundus of a patient'"'"'s eye at different wavelengths within a spectral range and determining spectral reflectivity of the retina for each pixel within a field of view (FOV). The retinal health is assessed based on the spectral reflectivity of the retina. The metabolic and anatomical activity of the eye is monitored to detect, at the earliest stage, activity that could lead to the onset of blinding eye diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts, etc.

Claims

1. A method for assessing retinal health of an eye of a patient, the method comprising:

sequentially imaging the retinal fundus of the eye at a series of wavelengths, a time duration of the imaging of the retinal fundus at an individual wavelength being an individual wavelength imaging time duration, a sum of all individual wavelength imaging time durations being less than a constriction latency period of the eye, the imaging being effected with an imaging device comprising a plurality of pixels;

determining a spectral reflectivity of the retina for each pixel within a field of view by comparing, for each pixel, the illuminating light energy with a reflected light energy on the basis of specular retinal reflectivity and diffuse retinal reflectivity data of the retinal fundus image; and

assessing retinal health based on the spectral reflectivity of the retina.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the individual wavelength imaging time durations are set to pre-determined values in accordance with a pre-determined illumination energy at each wavelength.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the pre-determined illumination energy at each wavelength is substantially the same for all wavelengths.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein sequentially imaging the retinal fundus of the eye is preceded by:

positioning the imaging device to image the retinal fundus of the eye by tracking a position of an anterior portion of the eye using a tracking camera distinct from the retinal imaging device.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein tracking a position of the anterior portion of the eye includes illuminating the anterior portion of the eye with a light source having a wavelength range substantially outside a visible range of the eye.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the anterior portion of the eye includes a pupil and an iris and wherein tracking a position of the anterior portion of the eye includes using a limbus tracker technique.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the imaging device includes a scientific grade CMOS camera.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein

sequentially imaging comprises capturing a sequence of substantially mono-spectral retinal images;

and

the step of determining the spectral reflectivity of the retina comprises an analysis of the sequence of substantially mono-spectral retinal images.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the imaging is through a pupil of the eye and includes:

illuminating the retinal fundus through a central region of the pupil; and

detecting reflected light through an annular region surrounding the central region.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

measuring a total area of the pupil; and

normalizing the reflected light energy to determine the spectral reflectivity of the retina independent of the total area of the pupil.

11. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

obtaining surface topology information of various reflective layers of the retina for assessing the retinal health.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of illuminating the retinal fundus comprises:

illuminating the retinal fundus using polarized light; and

analyzing polarimetrically the reflected light from the retina to determine the spectral reflectivity of the retina.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining a retinal auto-fluorescence factor by illuminating the retinal fundus at a first wavelength and imaging the retinal fundus at a second wavelength equal to an auto-fluorescence wavelength of the fundus; and

assessing the retinal health based on the retinal auto-fluorescence factor.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the first wavelength is equal to or less than 600 nm and the second wavelength is greater that the first wavelength.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein an illumination of the eye at the first wavelength is effected using a light beam having a diameter of about 3 millimeters.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining the ratio of the retinal spectral reflectivity within a first wavelength range to the retinal spectral reflectivity within a second wavelength range; and

using this ratio as an indication of retinal oxygenation for use in assessing retinal health.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the first wavelength range includes wavelengths comprised between 570 nm and 586 nm and wherein the second wavelength range includes wavelengths comprised between 586 nm and 610 nm.

18. A system for assessing retinal health of an eye of a patient, the system comprising:

an optical unit for sequentially imaging the retinal fundus of the eye at different wavelengths, the optical unit having an imaging sensor onto which the retinal fundus is imaged, the imaging sensor comprising pixels;

a light source module having light sources, each light source corresponding to one of the different wavelengths, the light source module also having a light source selection means to select a light source with which to illuminate the retinal fundus at an illuminating light energy, the light source selection means to switch from one light source to another in a switching time, a time duration of the imaging of the retinal fundus at an individual wavelength being an individual wavelength imaging time duration, a sum of all individual wavelength imaging time durations and of each switching time require to switch from one light source to another being less than a constriction latency period of the eye; and

a processor for determining spectral reflectivity of the retina for each pixel within a field of view by comparing, for each pixel, the illuminating light energy with a reflected light energy on the basis of specular retinal reflectivity and diffuse retinal reflectivity data of the retinal fundus image, and assessing retinal health based on the spectral reflectivity of the retina.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein the imaging sensor is a scientific grade CMOS imaging sensor.

20. The system of claim 18 wherein the light source selection means includes a rotatable mirror that can be rotated to selectively optically couple any one of the light sources to the retinal fundus.

21. The system of claim 20 wherein the light source module further has fixed mirrors, each fixed mirror to receive light from one of the light sources and to direct the light towards the rotatable mirror.

The system of claim 18 wherein the light source selection means includes movable mirrors, each movable mirror being movable between an in-path position and an out-of-path position, a movable mirror in the in-path position to optically couple light from a respective light source to the retinal fundus.

23. The system of claim 18 further comprising:

a monitoring image sensor to monitor a position of an anterior portion of the eye and to output a monitoring signal in accordance with the position of the anterior portion of the eye; and

a positioning system to position the imaging sensor in accordance with the monitoring signal.
