Abstract

Methods and corresponding systems for determining a transmit power in a mobile device include receiving, in the mobile device, a cell-wide power control parameter related to a target receive power at a serving base station. Thereafter, a transmit power is calculated in response to the cell-wide power control parameter and an implicit mobile-specific power control parameter. The mobile device then transmits using the transmit power. The cell-wide power control parameter can be a cell target signal to interference-plus-noise ratio, or a fractional power control exponent. The implicit mobile-specific power control parameter can be a modulation and coding level previously used by the mobile device, or a downlink SINR level measured by the mobile device.

Claims

1. A method for wireless communication power control comprising:

receiving a requested resource limitation from a wireless device that is based at least in part on a determination that a parameter related to a first resource budget for the wireless device exceeds a reporting threshold for the wireless device, wherein the first resource budget is associated with a data transmission for the wireless device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first resource budget is based at least in part on a transmission power level associated with the data transmission for the wireless device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first resource budget is based at least in part on a number of resource blocks associated with the data transmission for the wireless device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the parameter related to the first resource budget comprises information related to a power headroom limitation for the wireless device, the power headroom limitation including a difference between a power level sent to the wireless device and a maximum power level attainable by the wireless device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the determination that the parameter related to the first resource budget exceeds the reporting threshold comprises a determination that a resource block capacity limitation for the wireless device exceeds the reporting threshold.

6. A method for wireless communication power control comprising:

receiving a first resource allocation request from a wireless device, the first resource allocation request being responsive to a current resource allocation exceeding a reporting threshold for the wireless device; and

sending a resource allocation grant having a first time duration associated therewith, the grant comprising a first power control instruction configured to be used by the wireless device during the first time duration.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the resource allocation grant is dynamic, and further comprises:

a first allocation; and

an indication for the wireless device to use dynamically allocated transmit power.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the first allocation is consistent with a transmission power capability for the wireless device.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein:

the first allocation comprises a first number of resource blocks;

the transmission power capability is characterized by a resource block limit;

the first number of resource blocks exceeds the resource block limit; and

the data transmission is effected consistent with the transmission power capability.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the first power control instruction comprises a specific power control parameter configured to be received exclusively by the wireless device.

11. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

receiving a second resource allocation request from the wireless;

sending a persistent resource allocation grant including a second power control instruction, the persistent resource allocation grant having a second time duration associated therewith; and

subsequent to sending the persistent resource allocation grant, sending at least one additional power control instruction during the second time duration;

wherein;

the second instruction facilitates an initial allocation of transmit power for the wireless device during the second time duration;

the least one additional power control instruction facilitates at least one subsequent allocation of transmit power for the wireless device during the second time duration; and

the second time duration is greater than the first time duration.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least one additional power control instruction includes at least one instruction for the wireless device to either increment transmit power or decrement transmit power.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the at least one additional power control instruction comprises a specific power control parameter configured to be received exclusively by the wireless device.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein:

the at least one additional power control instruction comprises a plurality of additional power control instructions, each additional power control instruction of the plurality of additional power control instructions including an adjustment of the transmit power for the wireless device by a predetermined value; and

each additional power control instructions of the plurality of additional power control instructions, when implemented, cooperate to cause an accumulated transmit power adjustment.
