Abstract

One preferred embodiment of the present invention provides systems and methods for analyzing the delivery performance of newsgroup services. Briefly described, in architecture, one embodiment, among others, includes a newsgroup evaluation system configured to determine a delivery rate for a newsgroup server. In other embodiments, methods and systems are provided for analyzing completion and retention for newsgroup services.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

identifying a retention parameter for a newsgroup hosted by the newsgroup server;

calculating, via a processor, an amount of time between an oldest post available via the newsgroup and an earliest post available via the newsgroup;

comparing the amount of time to the retention parameter; and

assessing a retention grade based on the comparison.

2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein assessing the retention grade comprises assigning a failing grade when the amount of time is less than the retention parameter.

3. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein assessing the retention grade comprises assigning a passing grade when the amount of time is equal to or greater than the retention parameter.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising conveying a notification to a designated recipient when the retention grade is a failing grade.

5. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising determining a frequency at which the retention grade is a failing grade and conveying a notification to a designated recipient when the frequency exceeds a threshold.

6. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the amount of time is a number of days.

7. A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising determining whether a size of the newsgroup is greater than a threshold before measuring a retention performance of the newsgroup server.

8. An apparatus, comprising:

a memory comprising machine readable instructions; and

a processor to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising;

identifying a retention parameter for a newsgroup hosted by the newsgroup server;

calculating, via a processor, an amount of time between an oldest post available via the newsgroup and an earliest post available via the newsgroup;

comparing the amount of time to the retention parameter; and

assessing a retention grade based on the comparison.

9. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein assessing the retention grade comprises assigning a failing grade when the amount of time is less than the retention parameter.

10. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein assessing the retention grade comprises assigning a passing grade when the amount of time is equal to or greater than the retention parameter.

11. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise conveying a notification to a designated recipient when the retention grade is a failing grade.

12. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise determining a frequency at which the retention grade is a failing grade and conveying a notification to a designated recipient when the frequency exceeds a threshold.

13. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the amount of time is a number of days.

14. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise determining whether a size of the newsgroup is greater than a threshold before measuring the retention performance of the newsgroup server.

15. A tangible machine readable storage device comprising instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to perform operations comprising:

identifying a retention parameter for a newsgroup hosted by the newsgroup server;

calculating, via a processor, an amount of time between an oldest post available via the newsgroup and an earliest post available via the newsgroup;

comparing the amount of time to the retention parameter; and

assessing a retention grade based on the comparison.

16. A storage device as defined in claim 15, wherein assessing the retention grade comprises assigning a failing grade when the amount of time is less than the retention parameter.

17. A storage device as defined in claim 15, wherein assessing the retention grade comprises assigning a passing grade when the amount of time is equal to or greater than the retention parameter.

18. A storage device as defined in claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise conveying a notification to a designated recipient when the retention grade is a failing grade.

19. A storage device as defined in claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise determining a frequency at which the retention grade is a failing grade and conveying a notification to a designated recipient when the frequency exceeds a threshold.

20. A storage device as defined in claim 15, wherein the operations further comprise determining whether a size of the newsgroup is greater than a threshold before measuring the retention performance of the newsgroup server.
