Abstract

Methods and systems for controlling group communications using a mobile device includes detecting a motion of the mobile device corresponding to a user placing the device on a surface, maintain a communication session with another mobile device while the user is detected in proximity to the first mobile device, and entering a non-active communication mode when the user is not detected in proximity to the device. The communication session may be maintained for a time-out period before entering the non-active mode. Further methods and systems include transitioning to a non-active communication mode in response to detecting a motion of the mobile device corresponding to a user placing the device on a surface.

Claims

1. A method of group communication using a first mobile device, comprising:

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

detecting a motion of the first mobile device corresponding to a user placing the mobile device on a surface;

maintaining the communication session with the at least one second mobile device in an active mode while the user is detected in proximity to the first mobile device; and

entering a non-active communication mode when the user is not detected in proximity to the first mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the first mobile device has entered a non-active communication mode.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

maintaining the first mobile device in a non-active communication mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the first mobile device for a pre-determined timeout period; and

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication session is maintained in an active mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the first mobile device for a pre-determined timeout period, and the non-active communication mode is entered upon expiration of the timeout period.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein entering the non-active communication mode comprises suppressing communication at the first mobile device.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

while in a non-active communication mode, buffering received messages from the at least one second mobile device for later playback.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

monitoring for the voice of a user of the first mobile device to detect the proximity of the user to the first mobile communication device.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

biometrically sensing for the proximity of the user to the first mobile device.

9. A method of group communication using a first mobile device, comprising:

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

detecting a motion of the first mobile device corresponding to a user placing the first mobile device face down on a surface; and

entering a non-active communication mode in response to the detected motion.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein entering the non-active communication mode comprises suppressing communication at the first mobile device.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the first mobile device has entered a non-active communication mode.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

maintaining the first mobile device in a non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

detecting a movement of the first mobile device during the timeout period; and

resuming the communication session in an active mode in response to the detected movement.

15. A method of group communication using a first mobile device, comprising:

communicating with at least one second mobile device over a communication channel;

detecting a motion of the first mobile device corresponding to a particular user action; and

in response to the detected motion, entering a non-active communication mode of communication with the at least one second mobile device.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

maintaining the non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period; and

upon expiration of the timeout period, closing the communication channel.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

detecting a second motion of the first mobile device corresponding to a second particular user action; and

in response to the detected second motion, resuming communication with the at least one second mobile device.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein entering a non-active communication mode comprises muting at least one of incoming and outgoing communications at the first mobile device.

19. A mobile communication device, comprising:

a transceiver; and

a processor coupled to the transceiver and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

detecting a motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a user placing the mobile communication device on a surface;

maintaining the communication session with the at least one second mobile device in an active mode while the user is detected in proximity to the mobile communication device; and

entering a non-active communication mode when the user is not detected in proximity to the mobile communication device.

20. The mobile communication device of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the mobile communication device has entered a non-active communication mode.

21. The mobile communication device of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

maintaining the mobile communication device in a non-active communication mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the mobile communication device for a pre-determined timeout period.

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

22. The mobile communication device of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that the communication is maintained in an active mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the mobile communication device for a pre-determined timeout period, and the non-active communication mode is entered upon expiration of the timeout period.

23. The mobile communication device of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that entering the non-active communication mode comprises suppressing communication at the mobile communication device.

24. The mobile communication device of claim 23, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

while in non-active communication mode, buffering received messages from the at least one second mobile device for later playback.

25. The mobile communication device of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

monitoring for the voice of a user of the mobile communication device to detect the proximity of the user to the mobile communication device.

26. The mobile communication device of claim 19, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

biometrically sensing for the proximity of the user to the mobile communication device.

27. A mobile communication device, comprising:

a transceiver; and

a processor coupled to the transceiver and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

detecting a motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a user placing the mobile communication device face down on a surface; and

entering a non-active communication mode in response to the detected motion.

28. The mobile communication device of claim 27, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that entering the non-active communication mode comprises suppressing communication at the mobile communication device.

29. The mobile communication device of claim 27, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the mobile communication device has entered a non-active communication mode.

30. The mobile communication device of claim 27, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

maintaining the mobile communication device in a non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period.

31. The mobile communication device of claim 30, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

32. The mobile communication device of claim 30, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

detecting a movement of the mobile communication device during the timeout period; and

resuming the communication in an active mode in response to the detected movement.

33. A mobile communication device, comprising:

a transceiver; and

a processor coupled to the transceiver and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device over a communication channel;

detecting a motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a particular user action; and

in response to the detected motion, entering a non-active communication mode of communication with the at least one second mobile device.

34. The mobile communication device of claim 33, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

maintaining the non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period; and

closing the communication channel upon expiration of the timeout period.

35. The mobile communication device of claim 33, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

detecting a second motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a second particular user action; and

in response to the detected second motion, resuming communication with the at least one second mobile device.

36. The mobile communication device of claim 33, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that entering a non-active communication mode comprises muting at least one of incoming and outgoing communications at the mobile communication device.

37. A mobile communication device, comprising:

means for establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

means for detecting a motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a user placing the mobile communication device on a surface;

means for maintaining the communication session with the at least one second mobile device in an active mode while the user is detected in proximity to the mobile communication device; and

means for entering a non-active communication mode when the user is not detected in proximity to the mobile communication device.

38. The mobile communication device of claim 37, further comprising:

means for sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the mobile communication device has entered a non-active communication mode.

39. The mobile communication device of claim 37, further comprising:

means for maintaining the mobile communication device in a non-active communication mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the mobile communication device for a pre-determined timeout period; and

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

40. The mobile communication device of claim 37, further comprising:

means for maintaining the communication session in an active mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the mobile communication device for a pre-determined timeout period; and

means for entering the non-active communication mode upon expiration of the timeout period.

41. The mobile communication device of claim 37, wherein means for entering the non-active communication mode comprises means for suppressing communication at the mobile communication device.

42. The mobile communication device of claim 41, further comprising:

while in non-active communication mode, means for buffering received messages from the at least one second mobile device for later playback.

43. The mobile communication device of claim 37, further comprising:

means for monitoring for the voice of a user of the mobile communication device to detect the proximity of the user to the mobile communication device.

44. The mobile communication device of claim 37, further comprising:

means for biometrically sensing for the proximity of the user to the mobile communication device.

45. A mobile communication device, comprising:

means for establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

means for detecting a motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a user placing the mobile communication device face down on a surface; and

means for entering a non-active communication mode in response to the detected motion.

46. The mobile communication device of claim 45, wherein means for entering the non-active communication mode comprises means for suppressing communication at the mobile communication device.

47. The mobile communication device of claim 45, further comprising:

means for sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the mobile communication device has entered a non-active communication mode.

48. The mobile communication device of claim 45, further comprising:

means for maintaining the mobile communication device in a non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period.

49. The mobile communication device of claim 48, further comprising:

means for ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

50. The mobile communication device of claim 48, further comprising:

means for detecting a movement of the mobile communication device during the timeout period; and

means for resuming the communication in an active mode in response to the detected movement.

51. A mobile communication device, comprising:

means for establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device over a communication channel;

means for detecting a motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a particular user action; and

in response to the detected motion, means for entering a non-active communication mode of communication with the at least one second mobile device.

52. The mobile communication device of claim 51, further comprising:

means for maintaining the non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period; and

means for closing the communication channel upon expiration of the timeout period.

53. The mobile communication device of claim 51, further comprising:

means for detecting a second motion of the mobile communication device corresponding to a second particular user action; and

means for resuming communication with the at least one second mobile device in response to the detected second motion.

54. The mobile communication device of claim 51, wherein means for entering a non-active communication mode comprises means for muting at least one of incoming and outgoing communications at the mobile communication device.

55. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a processor of a first mobile communication device to perform operations comprising:

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

detecting a motion of the first mobile communication device corresponding to a user placing the mobile communication device on a surface;

maintaining the communication session with the at least one second mobile device in an active mode while the user is detected in proximity to the first mobile communication device; and

entering a non-active communication mode when the user is not detected in proximity to the first mobile communication device.

56. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the first mobile communication device has entered a non-active communication mode.

57. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

maintaining the first mobile communication device in a non-active communication mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the first mobile communication device for a pre-determined timeout period; and

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

58. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations such that the communication session is maintained in an active mode while the user is not detected in proximity to the first mobile communication device for a pre-determined timeout period, and the non-active communication mode is entered upon expiration of the timeout period.

59. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations such that entering the non-active communication mode comprises suppressing communication at the first mobile communication device.

60. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

while in non-active communication mode, buffering received messages from the at least one second mobile device for later playback.

61. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

monitoring for the voice of a user of the first mobile communication device to detect the proximity of the user to the first mobile communication device.

62. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 55, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

biometrically sensing for the proximity of the user to the first mobile communication device.

63. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a processor of a first mobile communication device to perform operations comprising:

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device;

detecting a motion of the first mobile communication device corresponding to a user placing the first mobile communication device face down on a surface; and

entering a non-active communication mode in response to the detected motion.

The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 63, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations such that entering the non-active communication mode comprises suppressing communication at the first mobile communication device.

65. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 64, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

sending a message to the at least one second mobile device indicating that the first mobile communication device has entered a non-active communication mode.

66. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 63, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

maintaining the first mobile communication device in a non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period.

67. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 66, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

ending the communication session upon expiration of the timeout period.

68. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 66, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

detecting a movement of the first mobile communication device during the timeout period; and

resuming the communication in an active mode in response to the detected movement.

69. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a processor of a first mobile communication device to perform operations comprising:

establishing a communication session with at least one second mobile device over a communication channel;

detecting a motion of the first mobile communication device corresponding to a particular user action; and

in response to the detected motion, entering a non-active communication mode of communication with the at least one second mobile device.

70. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 69, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

maintaining the non-active communication mode for a pre-determined timeout period; and

upon expiration of the timeout period, closing the communication channel.

71. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 69, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations further comprising:

detecting a second motion of the first mobile communication device corresponding to a second particular user action; and

in response to the detected second motion, resuming communication with the at least one second mobile device.

72. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 69, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the processor of the first mobile communication device to perform operations such that entering a non-active communication mode comprises muting at least one of incoming and outgoing communications at the first mobile communication device.
