Abstract

A device and method for carrying out dialysis and stimulation of a patient at the same time, in which an inflatable/deflatable cuff applies the stimulation.

Claims

29. A device for carrying out dialysis of a patient and stimulation of a patient at the same time, comprising:

a dialysis device; and

a stimulating device, wherein said stimulating device comprises an inflatable/deflatable cuff.

30. A device as defined in claim 29, wherein the cuff has the shape of a garment.

31. A device as defined in claim 29, wherein the cuff is shaped to fit a body part.

32. A device as defined in claim 31, wherein the cuff is shaped for application to a calf, foot or thigh.

33. A device as defined in claim 29, wherein the stimulation applied by the cuff is a combination of graduated sequential compression and rapid impulse inflation.

34. A device as defined in claim 29, further comprising a continuous passive motion (CPM) device.

35. A device as defined in claim 29, wherein the dialysis device and the stimulation device are linked together and the device further comprises a monitor and a controller for monitoring and controlling the overall process.

36. A device as defined in claim 35, wherein the link is made via wires or a wireless connection.

37. A device as defined in claim 35, wherein said monitoring and controlling are carried out to control stimulation carried out between dialysis sessions.

38. A device as defined in claim 29, wherein the dialysis device and the stimulating device are removably attached to each other as independent modules.

39. A method of treating a patient comprising;

providing a dialysis device and an inflatable/deflatable cuff;

applying dialysis to the patient; and

during dialysis, applying a stimulation to the patient via the inflatable/deflatable cuff.

40. A method as defined in claim 39, wherein the stimulation applied by the cuff is a combination of graduated sequential compression and rapid impulse inflation.

41. A method as defined in claim 39, wherein the method further comprises applying continuous passive (CPM) stimulation to the patient.

42. A method as defined in claim 41, wherein the CPM stimulation is a cycling motion at a frequency of about 0 to about 60 rpm.

43. A method as defined in claim 39, wherein at least two different types of stimulation are used during dialysis.

44. A method as defined in claim 39, wherein a stimulation is applied also between first and second dialysis sessions.

45. A method as defined in claim 44, wherein said stimulation applied between the first and second dialysis sessions comprises at least one of stimulation made by an inflatable/deflatable cuff or continuous passive motion (CPM) stimulation.
