Abstract

A system and method to provide a universal loyalty currency, facilitate exchange of loyalty benefits, and allow payments using loyalty benefits. A method includes: receiving registration information to associate account information of a payment account with at least one loyalty account to enable conversion of first loyalty benefits to second loyalty benefits; receiving, for a transaction, an authorization request identifying the account information and requesting the use of the second loyalty benefits to fund at least a portion of the transaction; and processing the transaction using the second benefits converted from the first loyalty benefits hosted in the loyalty account and funds from the payment account.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented system having at least one microprocessor and memory storing instructions configured to instruct the at least one microprocessor to perform operations, the system comprising:

a transaction handler configured to interconnect issuer processors and acquirer processors in a payment processing network, wherein each of the issuer processors is configured to make payments on behalf of consumers using consumer accounts issued to the consumers, and each of the acquirer processors configured to receive payments on behalf of merchants using merchant accounts set up for the merchants;

a data warehouse coupled with the transaction handler and configured to store transaction data recording payment transactions processed by the transaction handler;

a portal coupled with the data warehouse and configured to provide a user interface for registration of different loyalty reward programs, wherein when a user of a consumer account registers a loyalty reward program using the user interface, the portal is configured to store in the data warehouse data associating the consumer account of the user with the loyalty reward program; and

a loyalty broker coupled with the transaction handler and configured to exchange loyalty benefits provided in the loyalty reward programs for loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler, wherein after the data warehouse stores the data associating the consumer account of the user with the loyalty reward program, the loyalty broker is configured to communicate with a provider of the loyalty reward program to exchange loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user for loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler in payment transactions made in the consumer account of the user.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the loyalty broker is configured to exchange, at a time for authorization of a use of loyalty benefits, the loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user for the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler.

The system of claim 1, wherein the loyalty broker is configured to exchange, periodically in accordance with a set of predefined preferences of the user, the loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user for the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler in payment transactions made in the consumer account of the user.

The system of claim 1, wherein the loyalty broker is configured to exchange, in an automated way based on a set of predefined preferences, the loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user for the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler in payment transactions made in the consumer account of the user.

The system of claim 4, wherein the set of predefined preferences includes a threshold which, when exceeded by the loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user, causes the loyalty broker to exchange the loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user for the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler in payment transactions made in the consumer account of the user.

The system of claim 1, wherein the loyalty broker is configured to exchange, in response to a user request received in the portal, the loyalty benefits of the loyalty reward program offered to the user for the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler in payment transactions made in the consumer account of the user.

The system of claim 1, wherein in a payment transaction between the user and a merchant, made using the consumer account of the user, the merchant is reimbursed for a price discount, applied via the transaction handler to the payment transaction as the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler to the payment transaction.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein an amount for the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler to the payment transaction is specified by the user in initiating the payment transaction.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the merchant is allowed to manage offers for redemption of loyalty benefits by specifying an exchange rate of loyalty benefits and price discounts;

wherein the merchant is reimbursed according to the exchange rate.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the merchant sponsors a discount via specifying the exchange rate that is lower than a current exchange rate between respective loyalty benefits and currency backing the respective loyalty benefits.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein when the merchant provides no offers in association with redemption of loyalty benefits, the price discount is based on currency backing the amount of loyalty benefits specified by the user and provided by the transaction handler to the payment transaction.

12. The system of claim 7, further comprising:

a message broker configured to generate a confirmation alert when redemption of the amount of loyalty benefits specified by the user is authorized in the payment transaction; and

a media controller coupled with the message broker to transmit the confirmation alert to a communication reference stored in the data warehouse in association with the consumer account.

13. The system of claim 7, wherein the provider of the loyalty reward program is different from an issuer processor in control of the consumer account of the user.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein settlement of the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler to the payment transaction is integrated with settlement of the payment transaction.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the loyalty benefits provided by the transaction handler in payment transactions made in the consumer account of the user are hosted in the data warehouse.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the loyalty benefits hosted in the data warehouse can be earned from a plurality of participating merchants and used as a payment currency via the transaction handler.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the loyalty benefits hosted in the data warehouse are transferable among users via benefit tokens.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the loyalty benefits hosted in the data warehouse are not fixedly associated with any government issued currency.

19. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, in a computing apparatus, registration information to associate account information of a payment account with at least one loyalty account to enable conversion of first loyalty benefits to second loyalty benefits;

receiving, in the computing apparatus and for a transaction, an authorization request identifying the account information and requesting use of the second loyalty benefits to fund at least a portion of the transaction; and

processing the transaction using the second benefits converted from the first loyalty benefits hosted in the loyalty account and funds from the payment account.

20. A non-transitory computer storage medium storing instructions configured to instruct a computing apparatus at least to:

receive, in the computing apparatus, registration information to associate account information of a payment account with at least one loyalty account to enable conversion of first loyalty benefits to second loyalty benefits;

receive, in the computing apparatus and for a transaction, an authorization request identifying the account information and requesting use of the second loyalty benefits to fund at least a portion of the transaction; and

process the transaction using the second benefits converted from the first loyalty benefits hosted in the loyalty account and funds from the payment account.
