Abstract

This disclosure relates to medical fluid cassettes and related systems and methods. In some aspects, a medical fluid cassette includes a base and a magnetically attractive member overlying a fluid pump chamber of the cassette. The magnetically attractive member defines a cavity sized and shaped to receive a portion of a piston.

Claims

1. A medical fluid pumping system, comprising:

a medical fluid pumping machine defining a cassette enclosure, the medical fluid pumping machine comprising a magnetic piston; and

a medical fluid cassette configured to be disposed within the cassette enclosure of the medical fluid pumping machine, the medical fluid cassette comprising

a base; and

a magnetically attractive member overlying a fluid pump chamber of the cassette, the magnetically attractive member defining a cavity sized and shaped to receive a portion of the magnetic piston, the cassette being positionable within the cassette enclosure of the medical fluid pumping machine so that the piston is substantially aligned with the fluid pump chamber.

2. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the magnetically attractive member comprises a guiding peg extending from a body of the magnetically attractive member.

4. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 2, wherein the magnetically attractive member comprises a magnetically attractive plate having an aperture sized and shaped to receive the guiding peg.

6. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the magnetically attractive member comprises a magnetically attractive plate secured to a body of the magnetically attractive member.

7. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 6, wherein the magnetically attractive plate is in the form of a disk.

10. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 6, wherein the body is formed of a non-magnetic material.

12. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the magnetically attractive member is shaped to substantially conform to a recessed region of the base that forms a portion of the fluid pump chamber.

13. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 12, wherein the magnetically attractive member and the recessed region of the base are substantially dome-shaped.

14. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the piston comprises a magnet, and the magnetically attractive member comprises a material that is attracted to the magnet.

15. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 14, wherein the magnet is an electromagnet.

16. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the magnetically attractive member has a substantially flat surface that abuts a substantially flat surface of the piston.

18. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the magnetically attractive member is attached to a membrane of the cassette.

20. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the medical fluid pumping machine comprises first and second pistons, and the cassette comprises first and second magnetically attractive members that overlie first and second fluid pump chambers, respectively, the cassette being positionable within the cassette enclosure of the medical fluid pumping machine so that the first and second pistons substantially align with the first and second fluid pump chambers.

21. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 1, wherein the medical fluid pumping system is a dialysis system.

22. The medical fluid pumping system of claim 21, wherein the medical fluid pumping system is a peritoneal dialysis system.

24. A medical fluid cassette, comprising:

a base; and

a magnetically attractive member overlying a fluid pump chamber of the cassette, the magnetically attractive member defining a cavity sized and shaped to receive a portion of a piston, and the magnetically attractive member comprising a guiding peg configured to be disposed within a cavity of the piston when the piston is coupled to the magnetically attractive member.

25. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the guiding peg extends from a body of the magnetically attractive member.

27. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the magnetically attractive member comprises a magnetically attractive plate having an aperture sized and shaped to receive the guiding peg.

29. The medical fluid cassette of claim 27, wherein the magnetically attractive plate is in the form of a disk.

32. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the magnetically attractive member is shaped to substantially conform to a recessed region of the base that forms a portion of the fluid pump chamber.

33. The medical fluid cassette of claim 32, wherein the magnetically attractive member and the recessed region of the base are substantially dome-shaped.

34. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the magnetically attractive member has a substantially flat surface that abuts a substantially flat surface of the piston.

36. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the magnetically attractive member is attached to a membrane of the cassette.

37. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the cassette comprises first and second magnetically attractive members that overlie first and second fluid pump chambers, respectively.

38. The medical fluid cassette of claim 24, wherein the medical fluid cassette is a dialysis cassette.

39. The medical fluid cassette of claim 38, wherein the medical fluid cassette is a peritoneal dialysis cassette.

41. A medical fluid pumping system, comprising:

a medical fluid cassette defining a fluid pump chamber;

a medical fluid pumping machine defining a cassette compartment and comprising an electromagnetic piston that aligns with the fluid pump chamber of the medical fluid cassette when the medical fluid cassette is disposed in the cassette compartment;

a sensor to detect an electrical characteristic indicative of coupling between the electromagnetic piston and the medical fluid cassette; and

a controller to apply power to the electromagnetic piston based on the electrical characteristic detected by the controller.

45. A medical fluid pumping machine, comprising:

an electromagnetic piston;

a sensor to detect an electrical characteristic indicative of coupling between the electromagnetic piston and a medical fluid cassette; and

a controller to apply power to the electromagnetic piston based on the electrical characteristic detected by the controller.

46. A method comprising:

supplying electrical power to an electromagnet of a piston;

detecting an electrical characteristic of the electromagnet; and

determining whether the piston is coupled to a magnetically attractive member of a medical fluid cassette based on the detected electrical characteristic of the electromagnet.
