Abstract

An apparatus for assessing patient breathing and cardiovascular condition of a patient includes a storage medium for storing data regarding the breathing and cardiovascular condition of the patient, a processor in communication with the storage medium, the processor being configured to prompt the patient with a series of queries relating to patient breathing and cardiovascular condition, a display for presenting the patient with the series of queries and a date entry device for receiving responses to the series of queries. The processor is configured to tally positive responses to the series of queries to generate a sleep disordered breathing index.

Claims

1. An apparatus for assessing patient breathing and cardiovascular condition of a patient comprising:

a storage medium for storing data regarding the breathing and cardiovascular condition of the patient;

a processor in communication with the storage medium, the processor being configured to prompt the patient with a series of queries relating to patient breathing and cardiovascular condition;

a display for presenting the patient with the series of queries; and

a date entry device for receiving responses to the series of queries;

wherein the processor is configured to tally positive responses to the series of queries to generate a sleep disordered breathing index.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to snoring.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to excessive sleepiness.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to breathlessness at nighttime.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to cessation of breathing during sleep.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to quality of sleep.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to hypertension.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the series of queries comprises a query relating to a body mass index.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to report the sleep disordered breathing index to a physician.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to compare the sleep disordered breathing index to one or more thresholds.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the one or more thresholds includes a first threshold and the processor is configured to identify a low probability of sleep disordered breathing when the sleep disordered breathing index is equal to or less than the first threshold.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the first threshold is 1.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the one or more thresholds includes a second threshold, and the processor is configured to identify a high probability of sleep disordered breathing when the sleep disordered breathing index is equal to or greater than the second threshold.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the second threshold is 4.

15. A method for assessing patient breathing and cardiovascular condition of a patient comprising:

prompting the patient with a series of queries relating to patient breathing and cardiovascular condition;

recording responses to the series of queries; and

tallying positive responses to the series of queries to generate a sleep disordered breathing index.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of calculating a probability of sleep disordered breathing by comparing the sleep disordered breathing index with one or more thresholds.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the one or more thresholds includes a first threshold, and the processor is configured to identify a low probability of sleep disordered breathing when the sleep disordered breathing index is equal to or less than the first threshold.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the one or more thresholds includes a second threshold, and the processor is configured to identify a high probability of sleep disordered breathing when the sleep disordered breathing index is equal to or greater than the second threshold.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of reporting the sleep disordered breathing index to a physician.
