Abstract

The composite wound dressing apparatus promotes healing of a wound via the use of a vacuum pump. The vacuum pump applies a vacuum pressure to the wound to effectively draw wound fluid or exudate away from the wound bed. The vacuum pump is tethered to the wound dressing and is portable, preferably, carried by the patient in a support bag, which permits patient mobility. Moreover, the patient does not need to be constrained for any period of time while exudate is being removed from the wound.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a wound dressing including a first layer and a second layer arranged in superposed relation, the first layer configured to absorb wound fluid and substantially conform to a particular shape of a wound, the second layer configured to enclose the wound and provide a seal around the perimeter of the wound; and

a pump system including;

a vacuum pump applying vacuum pressure to the wound to draw the wound fluid away from the wound, the vacuum pump configured to be disposed within the first layer; and

a controller configured to control the vacuum pump.

2. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the port includes a one-way valve configured to permit the wound fluid to flow in a single direction away from the wound dressing and prevent flow toward the wound dressing.

3. The apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the port is integrally formed with the second layer of the wound dressing.

4. The apparatus according to claim 14, further comprising a collection canister configured to collect the wound fluid through the port.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a collection canister configured to collect the wound fluid and a pouch adapted for mounting to the body of a patient.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the collection canister is configured to be mounted in the pouch.

7. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the controller is configured to be mounted in the pouch.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the vacuum pump includes an internal self-contained battery source.

9. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the controller includes an override switch to configured to initiate or terminate operation of the vacuum pump without input from the pressure sensor.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second layer is transparent.

11. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the wound contact layer includes a plurality of pores configured to allow unidirectional flow of the wound fluid toward the first layer.

12. The apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the wound contact layer includes medicament coated thereto.

13. The apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the controller is configured to be electronically connected with the pressure sensor by an electrical wire through a port.

14. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the second layer includes a port in fluid communication with the first layer.

15. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a wound contact layer configured to be in direct contact with the wound.

16. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the pump system further comprises a pressure sensor configured to detect pressure within the wound dressing.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the pressure sensor is configured to be disposed beneath the second layer.
