Abstract

A physical activity data collection system may include one or more accelerometers configured to provide an output indicative of movements of an individual. The system may also include a controller configured to analyze information relating to the movements of the individual, based on the output of the one or more accelerometers; determine a physical activity type associated with the analyzed information; and store the determined physical activity type in a memory.

Claims

1. A physical activity data collection system, including:

one or more accelerometers configured to provide an output indicative of movements of an individual; and

a controller configured to;

analyze information relating to the movements of the individual, based on the output of the one or more accelerometers;

determine a physical activity type associated with the analyzed information; and

store the determined physical activity type in a memory.

2. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 wherein the one or more accelerometers are included in at least one accelerometer unit in communication with a data collection unit that includes the controller.

3. The physical activity data collection system of claim 2 wherein the at least one accelerometer unit is configured to be worn on an extremity of the individual.

4. The physical activity data collection system of claim 2 wherein the data collection unit is configured to be worn on a wrist of the individual.

5. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 wherein the one or more accelerometers are included in at least one accelerometer unit in communication with a data collection unit remotely located from the controller.

6. The physical activity data collection system of claim 5 wherein the data collection unit includes a processor configured to collect data from the one or more accelerometers, process the data, and send the processed data to the controller.

7. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 wherein the controller is further configured to determine a duration associated with the type of physical activity in which the individual engages.

8. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 wherein the controller is further configured to determine an intensity level associated with the type of physical activity in which the individual engages.

9. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 further including:

one or more infrared sensors configured to provide an output indicative of a pulse rate of a individual;

wherein the controller is configured to;

determine a pulse rate of the individual based on outputs from the one or more infrared sensors; and

determine the physical activity type based, at least in part, on the determined pulse rate.

10. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 further including:

at least one temperature sensor configured to provide an output indicative of at least a body temperature of the individual;

wherein the controller is configured to;

determine a temperature associated with the body of the individual based on outputs from the at least one temperature sensor; and

determine the physical activity type based, at least in part, on the determined temperature.

11. The physical activity data collection system of claim 1 wherein the controller is further configured to cause one or more advertisements to be provided to the individual based on the determined physical activity type.

12. The physical activity data collection system of claim 7 wherein the controller is further configured to cause one or more advertisements to be provided to the individual based on the determined duration associated with the type of physical activity in which the individual engages.

13. The physical activity data collection system of claim 8 wherein the controller is further configured to cause one or more advertisements to be provided to the individual based on the determined intensity associated with the type of physical activity in which the individual engages.

14. A method of identifying a type of physical activity in which an individual engages, including:

monitoring outputs of one or more accelerometers configured to provide an output indicative of movements of the individual;

analyzing information relating to the movements of the user, based on the output of the one or more accelerometers;

determining a physical activity type associated with the analyzed information; and

storing the determined physical activity type in a memory.

15. The method of claim 14, further including causing one or more advertisements to be provided to the individual based on the determined physical activity type.
