Abstract

Various systems and methods are described for configuring a logical data storage container. In one embodiment, an instruction to perform an operation to modify an attribute of the logical data storage container that is an abstraction of a plurality of pertinent storage containers is received. A translated instruction to perform a sub-operation associated with the operation is transmitted to each of a number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers. A level of success of the performing of the operation on the logical data storage container is detected based on a comparison of a threshold value to a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers. A report of the detected level of success is communicated.

Claims

1. A method of configuring a data storage system, the method comprising:

receiving an instruction to perform an operation to modify an attribute of a logical data storage container that is an abstraction of a plurality of pertinent storage containers;

transmitting a translated instruction to perform a sub-operation associated with the operation to each of a number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers;

detecting a level of success of the performing of the operation on the logical data storage container based on a comparison of a threshold value to a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers; and

communicating a report of the detected level of the success.

The method of claim 1, further comprising detecting a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on comparison of an additional threshold value to a number of steps of the sub-operation that are successfully processed on each of the plurality of pertinent storage containers.

The method of claim 1, further comprising including in the report information about one or more commands to be executed on at least one of the plurality of pertinent storage containers to bring the success of the processing of the sub-operation on the at least one of the plurality of pertinent storage containers from less than complete success to complete success.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining the steps of the sub-operation based on information about the plurality of pertinent storage containers and information about the operation.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining that the logical data storage container is comprised of the abstraction of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on an accessing of a value of a type attribute of the logical data storage container.

The method of claim 1, further comprising rolling back at least one step of a sub-operation on at least one of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on the level of the success of the performing of the operation on the at least one of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers falling short of partial success.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the level of success is one of failure, partial success, and complete success.

8. A system of configuring a data storage system, the system comprising:

at least one processor;

a redirector module implemented by the at least one processor and configured to;

receive an instruction to perform an operation to modify an attribute of a logical data storage container that is an abstraction of a plurality of pertinent storage containers;

transmit a translated instruction to perform a sub-operation associated with the operation to each of a number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers;

detect a level of success of the performing of the operation on the logical data storage container based on a comparison of a threshold value to a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers; and

communicate a report of the detected level of the success.

The system of claim 8, the redirector module further configured to detect a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on comparison of an additional threshold value to a number of steps of the sub-operation that are successfully processed on each of the plurality of pertinent storage containers.

10. The system of claim 8, the redirector module further configured to include in the report information about one or more commands to be executed on at least one of the plurality of pertinent storage containers to bring the success of the processing of the sub-operation on the at least one of the plurality of pertinent storage containers from less than complete success to complete success.

11. The system of claim 8, the redirector module further configured to determine the steps of the sub-operation based on information about the plurality of pertinent storage containers and information about the operation.

12. The system of claim 8, the redirector module further configured to determine that the logical data storage container is comprised of the abstraction of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on an accessing of a value of a type attribute of the logical data storage container.

13. The system of claim 8, the redirector module further configured to roll back at least one step of a sub-operation on at least one of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on the level of the success of the performing of the operation on the at least one of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers falling short of partial success.

14. The system of claim 8, wherein the level of success is one of failure, partial success, and complete success.

15. A non-transitory machine readable medium embodying a set of instructions that, when executed by a processor, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving an instruction to perform an operation to modify an attribute of a logical data storage container that is an abstraction of a plurality of pertinent storage containers;

transmitting a translated instruction to perform a sub-operation associated with the operation to each of a number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers;

detecting a level of success of the performing of the operation on the logical data storage container based on a comparison of a threshold value to a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers; and

communicating a report of the detected level of the success.

The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, further comprising detecting a level of success of the performing of the sub-operation on each of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on comparison of an additional threshold value to a number of steps of the sub-operation that are successfully processed on each of the plurality of pertinent storage containers.

17. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, further comprising including in the report information about one or more commands to be executed on at least one of the plurality of pertinent storage containers to bring the success of the processing of the sub-operation on the at least one of the plurality of pertinent storage containers from less than complete success to complete success.

18. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, further comprising determining the steps of the sub-operation based on information about the plurality of pertinent storage containers and information about the operation.

19. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, further comprising determining that the logical data storage container is comprised of the abstraction of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on an accessing of a value of a type attribute of the logical data storage container.

20. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 15, further comprising rolling back at least one step of a sub-operation on at least one of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers based on the level of the success of the performing of the operation on the at least one of the number of the plurality of pertinent storage containers falling short of partial success.
